Hey all,
I am an international student studying in Singapore - studying the IB and achieving good grades in Bio, Chem, Psych, English, Math and Spanish - you do all subjects as part of the IB.
There is no one in my family which has ever applied for medical school, so i am flying blind here. Just any info/advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some issues i have:

location - i am thinking the US - is that even possible. Cost. Where is good? Accommodation?

Program - Undergrad / Postgrad - an explanation please.

SATS or other test - requirements or what looks great on an application

An extra-curricular stuff that would aid my cause.

I am really set on Med school so this is not just a hopeless dream or whatever - i have the grades and determination. I just need a helpful person to point me in the right direction so to speak.

Thanks Again,

Sam

In the British system a student applies to medical school right out of high school. Not so in the US. In the US you go to a college or university first for three or four years and then apply to medical school in a separate application process. There are a few BS/MD programs that one can apply to right out of high school and do not involve a separate medical application step, but these are rare.

So if you want to go to medical school in the US, apply to college first. Also be aware that many US medical school will take only a very limited number of international students (if any). You can get more details on the pre-med board.

Depends on where you want to practice. If you’re an American I guess you would want to return to US. US route is 4+4; S$250k for undergraduate, $350k for medical school. UK and Australia are direct undergraduate, 6 years.

in the US, you go to college for 4 years before applying to medical school, it doesn’t really matter what school you go to before med school, as long as you get a strong base in the biological sciences or whatever the requirements are for US med schools.

Do you know any of the US schools that do take international students? Thanks.
