Applying to Michigan

Hi, I'll be applying to U of M in the fall and was wondering about the specific colleges.

What do people who want to apply for Ross do in their first year? How tough is preferred admission for Ross, is it on par with getting into top private schools? And are you completely rejected if you get into Michigan but not Ross preferred?

Pre-admits for Ross take liberal-arts classes along with Calc (if not placed out by AP/IB), Econ 101 (which can only be placed out by IB), and a first-year writing seminar. They also take LHC 250.
Preferred admission into Ross is pretty near the competitive level of getting into top private schools. And no, you’re not completely rejected into Michigan if you don’t get into the pre-admit program. In fact, not getting into pre-admit doesn’t hurt your chances at all for regular admission; you’d just become an LSA student for at least your first year.

Thanks haley! Just some follow-up questions:

Is the honors college (LSA, right?) as hard to get into, and would you be rejected if you didn’t get in?

And it’s easier to get into Ross applying as a UM freshman, correct?

Actually it is on the same level as top private schools (unless you’re referring to HYSPM). The acceptance rate was 18% this year or something like that. Last year, the average SAT of the accepted PA was 1492. That’s on par with all the top schools.

The Honors program has two entry points. One before freshman year, and one before Junior year. During Junior and Senior years is when most of the real honors coursework is (honors degree requirements plus thesis).

The first two years of the program is spent participating in honors events and is basically a program where you network with professors and other honors kids. Another perk is that you are basically guaranteed South Quad.

In terms of difficulty, graduating with Honors is probably more difficult than Ross. To get in before freshman year is probably on par with Ross pre-admit (but they look for slightly different things). Getting into an honors major before Junior year is easier or harder than Ross regular admission depending on the major.
