Applying to Penn.. Wharton or Arts&Sciences?

Hey guys I'm going to be applying to Penn ED, and planning on majoring in economics. I want to go into business and I'm planning on pursuing an MBA later on as well, but for my undergratuate education I really want somewhat of a solid liberal arts background. What I can't decide is whether to apply to the wharton undergrad program or to the college for an economics major... any suggestions here? and which would I have a better chance getting admitted to?

Wharton is business with liberal arts, but at the same time CAS is higher acceptance, and what's stopping you from taking Econ undergrad at CAS and doing Wharton for MBA?

I was favoring Wharton, but thinking about it now I could go either way if i happen to be accepted. Is there a way on the application to apply for wharton but go for CAS as a backup? or is it all or nothing with wharton?

I would have a shot at getting in, I think, but overall I just want to end up at Penn. Here are my numbers if you need them for consideration......

White Male from rural-ish minnesota
ACT: 33 (34,34,32,33) with 10 writing
SATII: Math 2 790, Chem 740
Rank of 4/370
GPA 4.something.. i think its 3.98 unweighted
This year i have 7 AP classes and have taken reall all that are offered at my school, although my school isnt particularily strong in the AP's... last year i got a 5 and 4 on world history and u.s. government but had to do tons and tons of supplamentary work to get those scores.. worked even harder on chem and got a 3 :(
I have strong EC's and a lot of them in different areas... varsity soccer, accomplished tuba player, nhs, peer helpers, link crew, i lead a senior tailgating club and also the prom and homecoming committees
Strong teacher recs i'd say and essays should be alright once i get around to writing them.... :)

Do I have a shot getting in to the Wharton Program?

you answered your own question when you said you want a strong liberal arts background. College. Especially if you intend on coming back for an MBA later, then it would be a lost opportunity to get a deeper liberal arts education.

Wharton trains you. SAS educates you. Think about it.

sounds good. thank you!

ahhh while i'm at it... do my numbers look alright for ED?

Wharton students tend not to go back for an MBA because they don't need it - essentially the Wharton undergrads in 4 yrs take about the same # and quality of business courses as you'd get in a 2 yr MBA prog. + the balance in liberal arts. If you are on Wall St. leaving to go back for an MBA will cost you major loss of income (plus tuition). If you are good, a lot of places will promote you without the MBA.

So, do you want to give up another 2 yrs of yr life sitting in a classroom in order to get extra lib. arts courses beyond what Wharton curriculum gives you?

Given your rural Minn. location and those #'s , I think you have excellent chance at Wh. - esp. if you apply ED.

Research this a lot more before you decide - you may regret not having gone to Wharton undergrad when you had the chance. If you decide that Wh. doesn't offer you enough lib. arts you can transfer out or do a dual degree with the college in 5 yrs (or even 4 if you have enough AP credit).

Awesome, thanks alot everyone

rural-ish?

well.. smaller farming town around 20k but its not a suburb or anything. larger towns are all an hour away or more. so i went with rural-ish

You sound like you want CAS. You can also always transfer to Wharton, or dual-degree if you feel ambitious (but you'll need a 3.8ish to do that).

well maybe even more than the liberal arts element i just dont want to sacrifice any of the university experience. I don't question the education as much. as long as i am fully a part of the university of pennsylvania despite my enrollment in the business school i think i would be happy. is there much to miss out on by enrolling in wharton?

Not at all. Wharton students are just as integrated into Penn as any other student. If you separate yourself, then that's a different story.

When it comes to campus life, you can't really tell who is who. The only "university experience" you are missing is a chance to take a wide breadth of interesting classes in the liberal arts.

The only thing you'd miss out on by being in Wharton (vs. college) is getting drunk/high every weeknight.

you forgot to mention playing halo with a bunch of dudes in the highrises friday nights...

meng, I never knew you were so jealous. You're welcome to join in next time. Oh wait, you're in the college. Never mind. Bring proof of real work (eg, a problem set) and we'll let you in.

will a double bacon cheesburger do instead?
