Does it help or hurt your chances? It seems to me that it would be bad for, say Brown to see someone also applying to HYP, because then if the student got in to one of those they'd likely go to the more "prestigious" school. However, there's always the "the more you apply, the more likely you'll get in to some" philosophy. I only ended up applying to Cornell as far as Ivies go, and I'd like to hear some more opinions on the topic. Thanks!

They shouldn’t be able to see what other colleges you’re applying to.

I don’t know about the new applications (Common App was not an option when i applied). The schools actually asked you to list what other schools you weed applying to back then.

If they can see your other schools, I think it shows the admissions committee that you just want an Ivy, not their particular school. This is especially true if you are applying to all of them or a few that are so different from each other - say Columbia and Dartmouth.

Again, if the committee can see your other school choices, I would think it fine to apply to a couple, but I wouldn’t go overboard with it. A boy in my high school class (many moons ago) applied to all the Ivies (salutatorian of our class, perfect SAT scores, great ECs, etc) and didn’t get into a single one. He ended up going to his safety school as that was the only other school he applied to.

There were several other kids in our grade that got into Ivies that year and he was bitter. I’ve always wondered if it was because he applied to them all and admissions just thought he was going for prestige.
