Does JHU admit to the college in general or are applicants required to apply to Krieger / Whiting / etc before admission? If so, how does this work on the common app and for BME applicants? I've searched through the JHU website but cannot find this information.
Thanks,

I think all universities admit by school. I know Cornells schools even conduct their own individual admission processes.

Thank you muhammad9211! Do you know how this works on the common app?

Well from my experience it was just one app for all the undergraduate schools. It was decided that you were either in the Whiting School of Engineering if you chose an engineering major or in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences if you selected a non-engineering major on the supplement (although I have read that the supplement hasn’t been launched yet). Also, to apply to BME all you had to do was indicate it as your first choice, no separate app required.

It is on the website [Johns Hopkins University Office of Undergraduate Admissions: Academics, Engineering at Hopkins](http://apply.jhu.edu/academics/engineering/) :

“Important note: Students wishing to enroll in the biomedical engineering (BME) major must indicate BME as their first-choice major on their application. Students are admitted specifically into the BME major, based on evaluation of credentials and space available. Students can be admitted to the university without acceptance to the BME major. No separate application is required.”

Hope this helped. :)

I think you have to tick which school you are applying to

Well the common app has been revamped so I guess that’s now the case (I just recall selecting the major that I intended to do and telling them why I chose it). The point is that it is a pretty simple process and like I said I just know from my experience that the school you were placed in all depended on what you selected as your intended major. Plus, once you’ve been accepted you can easily change your major and switch between the two schools (with the only exception being BME).

Just so it is clear, if you are applying as an undergraduate to the Homewood-based schools (i.e., Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering), you are essentially admitted to both schools simultaneously although you do check off which you plan to attend on the application form. Switching from one of these schools to the other is simply a matter of filing a form with the Registrar. The only exception is BME, which requires a separate admission to the major.

The other schools at JHU which have undergraduate programs (Peabody Conservatory, School of Nursing, and the Carey Business School) have separate admissions from the Homewood Schools.
