Applying to top colleges with SUPER low GPA?

My brother had a 2.7 GPA his sophomore for family issues as well. He eventually brought it to a 3.55 with his senior year grades in all A.P. classes. He is now at Cornell and in his application explained his family issues and I think they saw his potential. If you can maintain the 4.0 in all A.P.'s and make it to a 3.0+ it may not be totally out of the question. However this would require high SAT/ACT scores and a good explanation of the reasons for your grades. Colleges like to see an upward trend and it seems you may have that (despite freshman year). If you can pull together high test scores (like my brother did) I’d say it’s worth applying.
