Just wondering, I'm applying to some top schools, and I'm not taking Calc. Will this significantly hurt my chances? I love statistics, and have done internships with and and want to study it in college, so I figured AP Stats would be more interesting and useful for me. I'm currently getting a 95 in the class, the highest by 10 points.

Because of scheduling, I would've had to give up my science class (AP Bio) to take Calc. Is it possible to get into top schools?

Depends on your major. If it’s a science or math related major, it’ll be harder to slide by than it would be if you’re looking into humanities. However, Stat is an AP math course, so it wouldn’t hurt you. (I also took Stat instead of Calc)

As someone who has taken both AP Stat and Calc, I’d disagree with saying that Stat and Calc are equal difficulty. The calculus is much harder, while the stat is more coachable. Like slono said, it depends on what your major will be in college. If it is science related(Biology, for example) then the statistics will help you more than the calculus. If your major is more math related (computer science) the calculus would have helped better.

Overall, I feel like you made the best choice. AP Biology is a rigorous course on its own. You will stand out for having taken AP Biology and AP Stat than just taking AP Calculus, or just Calculus. In fact, taking calculus isn’t something you won’t do in college anyway, most likely.

I would try to take it online. My D’s guidance counselor told her it would hurt her chances at top tier schools to not have Calc on her transcript. So she had to give up AP English 12 to take Calc (due to scheduling conflict).

AP Calculus AB is very difficult at our school while Stats is considered a joke. I certainly would hope that they aren’t viewed the same, because it’s easy to get an A in stats while I got 2 B’s in Calc and a 5 on the AP makeup exam junior year.

Now, I am also taking Adv. calculus (AP BC) which is even harder than AB at our school, while many are opting out even if they took AB.

I don’t think it’ll hurt that much, they may see you as not challenging yourself enough in math but it’s still fine, especially if you are taking a rigorous senior courseload.

Ok, I’m going to try to take it online…but yes, if I major in any kind of science it would be biology, so I thought AP Bio was a MUST. I think Calc and Stat are around the same difficulty at my school–many people are getting much lower grades in Stat than Calc.

How long does an online course take, though? Can I still signup?

Oh, ok. I was looking at my school’s online course website, and some start second semester, and go at double the pace…that would be good timing for me because I have a study hall starting in january i could use for calc.
