Applying to transfer now?

I'm going to be a sophomore at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. The summer has given me time to think, and I decided that I may not really want to stay there. I looked at the admissions websites of a few schools recently, however, and most of them seem like they only accept transfer applications at the same time as other, regular decision applications. I am a total stranger to the transferring process, so could somebody tell me if there's any way I could apply somewhere now so that I could transfer for the spring semester of 2007-2008?

carnegie mellon

whats your major?

Yeah, there are a lot of schools that take spring transfers. But my advice is that its better to go to a school you really love and have to wait till the fall then to settle for a school you dont love as much because you want to get there a semester sooner.

You can also take this year off so you don't have to be at the school you don't like. Or you can go and continue to build your transcript ,etc.

Although a lot do take spring transfers, many do not. So it will limit your choices and I agree with ClaySoul that it's not a great idea to limit yourself to spring transfer schools if that group doesn't already include your top choices.

Not sure where you are seeing this. I know that the UC system has the same or similar deadlines for transfer as for freshmen, but most other schools have quite different timetables.

I'd say the typical timetables are something like this:

Freshman EA/ED/SCEA application deadlines: around Nov. 1
Freshman regular application deadlines: late December/January 1, even as late as February
Freshman rolling application deadlines: widely varying, with less selective schools accepting apps all the way into the summer
Transfer application deadlines: a very few in November; a few more in December, early January. Vast majority around March 1/March 15. A few in May.
Transfer rolling application deadlines: see freshman rolling, above.
