Applying to two Schools

I hear from a friend today that applying to two schools could hurt your chances at your second choice.

I figured Tepper was a longshot but decided I wanted to try so I put it first then put Humanities second. If I don't get into Tepper, would putting two schools down hurt my chances?

I hope not, I applied to three...

i only applied to engineering. its the only interest i am willing to pursue

I don't think it matters. My S applied to CIT, MCS & HSS last year and was accepted to all three.

I was accepted into both CIT and MCS back when I applied.

I'm not saying your chances are reduced for all the schools you applied to, just the ones you stated as your second and third choices. Basically, if you get rejected to your top choice, your second choice may be harder to get into.

It kinda makes sense but I hope it's not true since I don't really have a chance of getting into Tepper and I don't want to hurt my chances to Humanties

As a side note, I heart CMU doesn't account for freshmen grades (like UMich), is that true?

Just apply, it will not have an effect on your chances.

nrhk: True, CMU disregards freshmen year grades from high school.

From what I've been told your application is sent to each college individually, and your chances are not harmed by applying to several. It's not like they get together at lunchbreak and go "Did you reject David Hasselhoff's application? Oh, man! Okay, I guess we'd better reject him too then."
