I'm going to apply to UCB this November for a degree in Physical Sciences and I was wondering what my chances were. I've signed TAGs with UCD, UCSD, and UCSB for a degree in Biochemistry and that's the degree I would ultimately like to pursue. I talked to my TAP coordinator and she said that I would have no problem changing majors just as long as they are both in the same college, which they are. I am also planning on applying to Stanford and Yale, but I'm not sure if I should even bother. The reason I applied am applying to physical sciences as opposed to Biochem is because I don't meet the pre-reqs. I have to retake calculus and physics because the calculus I took wasn't for engineer or physical sciences majors and my physics was trig-based.

I am a pre-med student and I'm not particularly sure where I should go. Davis is a half hour drive from where I live and I'd like to get out into the world a little bit more. I wouldn't be opposed to going to Davis, as it is a great school, however, I want to have some kind of "college experience." Berkeley is known for being one of the top schools in America and so I've been leaning towards Berkeley. I've heard it's extremely difficult, so I am a little intimidated, however I like to be challenged.

I would appreciate any responses! Thanks in advance!

100% into any UC you apply at imo, including cal.

but if you’re premed and you have all of those EC’s why don’t you apply at some private schools and try to get full ride scholarships? UC’s don’t really have premed as far as I know, people just generally major in bio.

not to sound rude or anything but with “President of school chapter of SACNAS” and the fact that you are a minority, I would be 100% shocked if you couldn’t get a full ride. especially with the 4.0. a lot of private schools will have programs far more tailored for medicine, and less challenging to preserve your 4.0 for actual med schools.

Did you check the MCB major for UCB? They have a biological chemistry option. Did you check the pre-reqs for that?

Davis and Cal are both good options. I really wanted to go to UCLA, but now that I’m here at Cal, which is 15 min from my house, I like the fact that I can go home on weekends and defuse in a more comfortable (and less dirty) place.

I don’t really know much about private schools, other than Stanford and Yale. Their transfer rates are so low and I’m not sure that a 4.0 and a few ECs are enough. It doesn’t mean that I still won’t try and make my application perfect, however, I’m not expecting much. What private schools would be particularly good for pre-med? If I could get a full-ride to anywhere that would be awesome.

UCB does have biochem under MCB, however, their pre-reqs require that I take cal-based physics and a harder calculus than I took.

I know I would really like Davis because it’s very close and almost all of my friends are transferring there, but I want to be a little more independent and see how I adjust away from things that are familiar.

Don’t worry about the physics. Most people don’t even finish before transferring as a MCB major. For chem bio you should.

What is up with your calculus? What type of calculus did you take?

If I were you I would just transfer to a school that takes everything you taken. You don’t want to waste your time retaking. It is not worth it. I would spend my time studying for the MCAT instead.

so people are still doing ‘chance me’ threads with 4.0s + endless extra currics.
those people make me sick.
you’d think the grades alone would provide affirmation enough for you to sleep at night.
go get drunk, or something.
