I asked a question similar to this not too long ago, but I want to be more direct this time. I'm applying to UCLA as a Sociology major and out of the 4 pre-reqs, I only will have 2 done by the time I apply. So I will need to take the other 2 during Spring. Does anyone know of someone who was accepted last year that waited this long to do their pre-reqs? I have a 3.9 GPA, but I'm freaking out that this pre-req thing is going to ruin my chances. I changed majors at the last minute in case anyone was wondering!

I’m in same situation (even same GPA), except it’s for communications. Then again, I dont care about UCLA. :[

hmmm if you go lurk some “rejected” threads you’ll find that a lot of them called la up and were told that they got rejected to due the lack of pre reqs completed.
still with your gpa, it might not hurt your chances to the point where you get rejected.

Yeah, I’m hoping my GPA can sort of make it better. It’s kind of stupid how they say you can finish them in the Spring, but have this unwritten code that you should basically always finish before that. I mean I know that the reason is because they want to make sure you don’t fail those classes in the Spring and then have to take them over, thus holding you back from graduating on time in some instances if you don’t take them in the Summer. And the other reason because they want to see how well you do in the pre-reqs that pertain to your given major, but if they are that concerned that I’m going to screw up my GPA over classes dealing with my major, then they can just say “you must get an A in both of these classes” and if I don’t, well then that’s my own damn fault!

@Investment- I feel for you man, Communications was always my first choice, I even have all the pre-reqs done, but the demand for a 3.95+ GPA has forced me into this last minute frenzy.

Exactly! It’s so messed up. I asked my counselor about this. I specifically asked if it would ‘hurt my chances’ because that’s what I’ve been reading around here. She just said that it’s not necessary that I complete all the prereqs by Fall. Well, lady, tell that to those who got unjustly rejected because they thought all along that it wouldn’t be an issue.

Sigh. You’d think that they would at least put you on the waiting list if this were your case…no matter how tedious on their part that would be. Or they could just flat out tell us about this. -_-

Whaaaat. I didn’t know that. I finished stats and intro to soc. I just need finite math, but I have that planned for spring quarter. Didn’t know I might be at a disadvantage for UCLA… I have a 3.6+ w/ TAP & really good essays.

Regent, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I think 3.6, even with TAP, is too low. :|

Haha it is low compared to the average for sociology majors, but I have enough faith that my personal essays will get me in.

3.6 + TAP is definitely high enough for sociology. I’m guessing he thought you were a comm major.

The average admitted GPA for sociology last year was a 3.69 I belive. If you have all your pre-reqs done by Fall (unlike me ) You should be a shoe-in, especially since you are TAP certified.

@Nick773 I still have Finite Math for Spring. You have a strong GPA! If you plan to finish your pre-reqs in the Spring, you shouldn’t worry. Explain yourself on the additional comments. Lotsa transfers got into UCLA last year w/out completing prereqs in the Fall. You’ll get in! <3

@regent57- My head is spinning though because I just can’t bear to apply and then be faced with that rejection letter stating “you did not complete 2 pre-reqs soon enough.” My other major is communications (heres another thread explaining my story http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1034255-sociology-communications.html) and I have all my pre-reqs done, but the competition is so tough, I feel sociology would be easier to get accepted.

I just think they will see my application and be like “why does this kid not have his last 2 pre-reqs done, and if he’s so serious about being a sociology major, then why does he have hardly any Soc releated classes and all these Comm classes?” lol this is definitely one of my hardest decisions I’ve ever had to make.

Well, you have your personal statement! Do you have any tangible things, extra-curriculars, that could somehow relate to your interest in sociology… Maybe a class you took for communications, like Public Speaking, ex: standing up for equal rights, addressing inequalities? Volunteer work? They want to hear about tangible things, WHY they are important, and where your passion lies within… :] Best luck with your decision!
