Applying to USNA...again?

Hello all-

I applied to the academy last year and did not get in. 3'Q candidate with 2 nominations. I was close. Now I am in the NROTC at the University of Utah and thinking about applying again. Last year I didn't receive any help from my BGO, and am not getting any this year. Does anyone know anything about prior applicants and how NROTC plays into this all? Any information would help!

-Utah

I was one. The process is the same as before. I suggest finding a new BGO in the university's area if your old one didn't help. Their influence is considerable.

As for NROTC 'fitting into it all,' you are now eligible for the NROTC nomination. All you have to do is talk to your freshman adviser in the unit, or the unit's CO. The CO can only nominate one or two people per year. The difference is that you'll be in one more nomination pool. So if all your congressman's nominees get in, USNA can still pick you from the NROTC nomination pool.

Do well in class. Get As and Bs in plebe-like classes (Calc, Chem, history, english, etc). But don't forget to have fun.

Make sure you REALLY want USNA. NROTC is a great deal, and we all come out wearing the same number of bars. I still go out to Seattle to visit friends from the unit during leave...even though I live in Houston.

you have nothing to lose for trying.
and everything to lose for not.

IMO- a candidate who applies for a second time only indicates to me one thing......... motivated, determined, and will not take no for an answer. Personally, that is exactly the qualities in a candidate I would want.

Good for you. Now go for it.

DMeix-

What are some of the things you did in NROTC? GPA and PFT? Classes?

I took Chem and Calc the whole year, as well as history classes not associated with the unit (WWI, Military history of the US), and classes required by the scholarship (Naval Science, History of US Seapower I & II). On the transcript I sent to USNA, I had a 3.2 GPA.

In the unit, I was required, as a freshman, to be on the drill team. I was also on the exhibition drill (like the Silent Drill here) and the Physical Skills team. These teams competed in an annual competition known as Northwest Navy in which the NROTC units from various PNW colleges competed (UW, Idaho, Oregon State, and two others).

I was a Navy option but I still worked out with the Marine options three times a week. Because I did this, the Marine Officer Instructor asked me to join them on the FTXs to Ft. Lewis in the Spring.

I don't recall exact scores on the PFT and PRT, but I never got below a 280 on the PFT and Excellent Medium on the PFT. I only did the PFT because I PTed with the MOs...it didn't affect my FITREP at all.

Go out there, kick some a$$, and have a helluva good time. I loved NROTC. Who knows...you may even decide to stay with the unit instead of going USNA.

What was your high school application like? GPA and scores. Stuff like that.

Utah,

I think I remember your story from last year -- you had a BGO that was more than "less than helpful" I recall. The advice above from Dmeix is critical -- get a new BGO -- someone at your college town rather than your home town, or ask for a new one to be assigned. And, your unit commander is a potential new mentor to guide you through the process the second time, plus you have so much going for you by experiencing it the first time.

Best of luck!

Hello Utah-represent!!!!!! So glad to see you are not giving up on your dream. Follow Dmeix's advice to the letter .....tis a small world by the way since YOU know ME and I know YOU and Dmeix knows ME and also my kiddo there at USNA....but that's another story!!! Tell your mom to write me since I sent her an email a few weeks back asking about YOU!

And trust me - there are many young people just like you who reapply and receive USNA Appointments after one year of ROTC.

GOOD LUCK!
GO NAVY!

Thanks everyone!
I am concerned because I let my grades slip my last term in high school after I found out I didn't get into the academy. I ended up with a 3.6 unweighted. Errrr...
Am I eligible for a Navy/Reserve nomination as well? I am technically in the Navy Reserves as an E-1... Any info?

Are you doing something besides NROTC with the Navy? Otherwise, you're just a MIDN 4/C in ROTC...the scholarship doesn't make you an E-1 anywhere.

My high school stuff wasn't spectacular. I had a 3.5 unweighted, 1340 SAT, 4 years XC and Track, 3 Varsity letters in those sports. Eagle Scout, and a few other ECAs thrown in there.

The big thing to concentrate on is going to Academics. The SAT is supposed to test how well you would do with college-type academics, so once you're actually taking college courses, the SAT will be of little value compared to your GPA at the university. If you have above 1300, I don't see much reason to retake it.

OMGosh!! Utah-represent! It is so good to see you! Same as Peskemom, have your mom write me!

Go for it, Utah. DMeix has some good advice, as well as Peskemom. Get the new BGO; they are invaluable (when they're helping you).

Straight from the admissions folks at USNA, "We LOVE people who re-apply." My son was waitlisted last year and did eventually get in with '11, but the RD for admissions for our area encouraged him to reapply if he wasn't successful.

Go for it.
