applying to UT-Austin as out of state student

How much more difficult is it to get admitted to University of Texas at Austin as an out of state student?

How does geography (I reside in PA) and ability to pay full tuition (I would not apply for financial aid) effect admission?

I know for state schools such as UVA and UNC it takes near perfect grades to get admitted as an out of state student -- so how would you compare UT?

Only 10+% are from OOS. [Spring 2009 Total Enrollment at The University of Texas at Austin Increases for Hispanic, African American and Foreign Students | The University of Texas at Austin](http://www.utexas.edu/news/2009/02/16/spring_2009_enrollment/)
Being full pay would help but your grades and scores need to be at the top end of the spectrum to be competitive.

You’ll also need near-perfect grades to get into UT OOS. Class rank is probably the most important factor, followed of course by good test scores, EC’s, etc.

The thing about Texas is they have the top 10% rule, which fills up a huge % of their classes. The vast majority of them are actually very poorly prepared for college and they actually have a couple programs that move kids from some lower level UT schools (like UTSA) up to UT Austin after 1 year. A few kids from my HS had to participate in that program because we had 59 kids in my senior class.

That makes it pretty tough to get into UT from out of state, but its worth a shot if you have good stats. As long as your numbers are pretty strong I’m sure you’d be fine. Probably better to go to a private school though if you can.

Thanks for sharing your insightful perspective, BigMike. Please, BigMike, could you kindly indulge us and reconcile your statement with UT’s average ACT score of 27, 92% freshman retention rate, and 80% graduation rate? These aren’t impressive numbers but they hardly indicate a university filled with “very poorly prepared” students.

Why the hell do you want to come here? Bad idea man.

why do you say that Rh. ?

Geographic residence is much less important for UT Austin than it is for UNC or UVA, according to its CDS.

UT Austin has the roughly same percentage of OOS students (5%) as international students (4%). Assuming the admit rates are also similar, OOS students have about a 20% admit rate.

Rh. why should I not go to UT-Austin? Please share…

bluechalk2: did you end up getting in? If so, could you please share some of your stats?
I’m an out of state student wishing to go to UT but am not sure of my chances of getting in!

Can you afford $50K/year?

I don’t know if being full pay does help.

Publics are usually need blind.

I wasn’t asking to see if it would affect his/her chances. Just trying to make sure this poster’s eyes (and billfold) were open. Otherwise why try to get in?
