Applying to Wellesley and others... advice appreciated =)

Hi, my name is Charlotte Wang. I am a Burmo-Taiwanese senior currently attending the International School of Yangon in Myanmar. I have lived in South East Asia my whole life, so I'm not sure whether that's a plus or no-no.

First of all, I'm new to this... but it seems like everyone is so accomplished and ahead of the game! I've always considered myself quite the overachiever, (well, atleast in my school) but reading the achievements of these Ivy-hopefuls really humbles me.

As for me, I am a Wellesley hopeful - its a reach and dream. I would greatly appreciate if anyone is willing to appraise me. Hehe.. or any advice would do. If you think I'm shooting too high, which college would you suggest for me? Don't worry or hesitate to tell me whether I am aiming to high. I just need some honest advice.

Rank in senior class: 3rd
GPA: 3.7 out of 4.0 scale (our school has no grade inflation)
Old SAT: 1260
New SAT: 720, 770, 620
AP: (Taken in junior year) US History - 4, Biology - 4
(Will take this May) French, English Language, Psychology, European History

ECs

I am the vice-president of the Student Council. (I've only started serving this year, though)

9 years of choir: 4th~8th grade in Yangon Children's Choir, and 9th ~10th grade in ISY VOCE choir. (I am the piano accompanist in the choir)

Piano - 6 years, performed in various concerts and I will send in a recording of my piano playing and vocals for the Arts Supplement

I attended all four years of ISB Choir Festival where our choir members are selected and to fly to Thailand and perform. (The legendary John Trepp was the conductor!)

4 years of varsity softball. I am the third basewoman. Our school has been second place for two consecutive years in the SEASAC (South East Asian Schools Association Something... I forgot). But this year, we will win championship =D By the way... an achievement that may not impress others is that I've hit two homeruns last year! I am the second person on the team to do this.

I was one of the two selected students that were paid to fly to Thailand to participate in the Rotary Tsunami Council. We raised over 5,000 dollars!

Paid internship during the summer vacation at the Myanmar Times. I worked as a reporter and featured writer. I have published on national newspaper over thirty articles.

Volunteer English Tutoring to Burmese orphans - 30 hours

Awards

English Excellence Award (11th grade)
French Achievement Award (11th grade)
English Achievement Award (12th grade)

Honor Roll (9~12)

Financial Aid

Money is my biggest problem.

I am from a single-parent family and I do not want my mother to break her back trying to earn money to afford me to college. I can only pay about 10,000$ a year. I am willing to work any jobs. (I'll probably go to the college that offers me the most money.)

What I have to say about myself

My motto is: Work hard, party hard. I am not like the stereotype Asian students who only spend quality time with their textbooks. Sorry, if I am offending anyone - but I can say the three traits that I love about myself is my passionate enthusiasm, perseverence and sense of humor. (During my junior year, I received the Loudest Laugh award in my class! =D)

Anyways, oh my god - i wrote so much fluff. I appreciate your time.

Oh and here is my short list: Wellesley, Brown, Barnard, Mt. Holyoke, Vassar, Connecticut College, Bard and Grinnell.

Thank you so much!!!

that is a good start for a list of schools, but you dont have any safeties. all of the schools are good matches or reaches.
<side note="">: connecticut college loves international students from east asia, and i know they are very generous with their financial aid to those students.</side>

For a "safer" school maybe Wheaton in MA or Goucher MD?

to huskem55 - thanks for your side note about connecticut college. i am trying to apply to the least number of colleges possible to cut down on the application fees. (There are only a few that have online fee waivers). So I guess ConColl is definitely going to stay.

to pyewacket - wheaton, huh? thanks for the advice. I just went and did a little mini-research. Wheaton is part of the Twelve-College Consortium... so does that mean that even if I don't get into Wellesley and in to Wheaton - I can take classes there?

By the way, sorry that I forgot to mention... I would like to apply to schools in the MA and NY areas. I think it sounds ridiculous, but most of the alumni from my school are going to school there, so I would like to be near them since I have never step foot in the Western Hemisphere.

So can anyone suggest anymore safeties for me? Thanks. =D
