Applying Undecided vs Applying Engineering?

Hi,

I'm in a bit of a dilemna. I want to do engineering in university, but my grades for physics aren't that great. That said, my 2nd choice major would be Business, in which my grades are a lot better.

My question is on the online application, if I select Engineering as my undergrad major, can I still be accepted to other programs such as business or humanities if my qualifications don't meet engineering? Or, will they just reject me because I chose engineering and I don't cut it?

Secondly, if I go undecided, can I still be accepted to business/engineering programs or do I have to do the humanities/undecided courses required? Will they give me options to programs if I choose undecided?

I'm planning to apply to UIUC, Purdue, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, Penn State and Ohio State. Thanks for any help!

For UIUC, if you are not accepted for engineering you are then considered for Division of General Studies as an undecided. The school of business is similar. Just be aware that though the engineering college has the higher middle 50% ranges, rank/test score, it is actually the business college that is the hardest to get into.

If you instead apply and are accepted as undecided to DGS, you can then try to transfer to engineering after first year or second year or business after first year. To transfer you must take first year the courses that freshman in those other colleges would usually take. High grades are needed and, if you have them, it is easier to transfer to engineering than it is to business.

Thanks for your reply! It cleared some doubts up, and makes me seem like going Engineering for UIUC might be the better way to go, and hope I get deferred to undecided if I don’t get in :)
