I am currently a junior in high school and I know it’s still early for me to worry about a major, but I feel that it would be better for me to search for colleges that have good programs for possible majors.
I’m thinking either business (management or accounting) or computer science.
However, I never took a course in high school or did any extracurriculars related to computer science.
I have some personal background in accounting due to my parents.
Would it be better to apply undecided or choose one of the two majors?
It depends on the schools you apply to. Some schools you may have a harder time transferring into a major like CS. Other schools won’t care. My kids both go to LACs where declaring a major isn’t done until the end of sophomore year so applying to any major is irrelevant.
Also, I wouldn’t worry about not having any CS classes in HS. I think that’s probably true of a lot of students.
Thank you for your help!
I am not trying to be difficult or imply that others are wrong. I interview applicants in CS. Most of the applicants if not all, have taken computer courses in hs as well as gong to computer camps in the summer. It might be best to take a course or two this summer to see if you enjoy the field and have the talent for it before thinking of majoring in a discipline you really have little experience in .
Most colleges recognize that passions change and expect that you might/will change your declared major. Although some schools are firm in not allowing a change of major. Check that out when you apply.
Undeclared does not penalize you, btw.
