Applying UT Austin

Hello I am applying to UT Austin with a top 25 percent rank and SAT score of 1780 (retaking soon). I know for a fact that I can not get in, but can I at least get the CAp program. I want to get into UT's business school. So is it a better option to apply to UT austin as a transfer student instead of just applying to get Capped?

I am in the same situation as you. I have 1920 SAT, top 28%. Admission chances look grim, but I had a solid application. Since I applied to geosciences, there is a strong chance I will get in because it is an unpopular major.

Business is the most competitive major at UT aside from engineering and communications. Chances are you will be CAPPED. Work on your December SAT score (UT takes them). Hopefully I will score a 2100 on this next SAT.

CAP isn’t all that bad, if you are die hard on UT. For example, if I was CAPPED I would attend UT Arlington for 1 year with a full ride. Entering UT as a sophomore, I’d have 0 debt and a 3.9+ GPA. CAP is a good way to get in the groove of the college experience. Then again, you are missing out on all the fun that Austin provides.

If you get accepted into TAMU or Baylor good luck on deciding took take up the CAP offer or not. It is a tough decision. Best of luck.

ok, so the chances are that I will be capped?
I am just scared that I wont be capped. People told me everyone gets capped, but I looked at the website and it said that you have to be offered to be capped.
thx again

No way in hell you will get into business with a 1720 SAT and 25% class rank. You basically need a 2300 SAT with that class rank to even have a chance. McCombs takes less than 10% of applicants.

What was your second choice major? If it was College of Education or Nursing you might get in.

Well you will be capped. they won’t offer CAP to someone who clearly can’t handle college. (less than 1500 SAT. bad gpa).

The average SAT for kids outside of top 10% is over 2100 at McCombs. The lower your rank, it becomes exponentially harder to get in.

UT assigns you an academic index (AI) score and plots you on a graph. This score consists of Class rank, SAT math, SAT verbal, and SAT writing.

For Texas residents and OOS applicants outside of the top 10% a Personal Achievement score is assigned using a formula (score of 1-6 on both essay topic, special circumstances, extracurriculars, socioeconomic factors, difficulty of high school, leadership ability…)

Then around February, UT plots students within the same majors on a graph. Those with the highest AI and PA indexes are in. (First quadrant of graph). Depending on the major you applied to, so will be the competition you are up against. Certain majors such as Geosciences, Education, and Liberal Arts have less competitive applicants.

Those who don’t make the final cut are often offered the CAP program.

Here are the formulas they use to plot you on the graph.

PAI = [(personal achievement score * 4)+(mean essay * 3)] / 7.

Business – SAT Model
-2.668 + (SAT M * .002) + (SAT W * .001) + (HSR * .032) + (SAT CR * .001)
Plug in the numbers to find out your AI.

For your class rank use this formula:

[1-(classrank/class size)]*100

Different colleges within UT have different formulas for predicting Freshman GPAs.

thx so much for the info again!

no problem. That is pretty much how UT decides if you make the cut or not. What was your second choice major? I can give you the formula to figure out your AI with that.

Also, send me your UT essays. I’d like to read them :).

sahiti it ;)
