Do I have to buy the new Adobe Acrobat 9.0 program to type in my answers to the common app? Or am I just not tech-savvy enough and am missing something...?

By the way, I know I can just apply online, but I'd rather paper (as would my school).

yes but think of the trees you’re wasting for no reason…

Fwiw, most schools strongly prefer an online application, and practically demand that you use it unless it is absolutely not feasible.

When you go on your college tours and attend the admissions information sessions, be sure to ask the admissions reps what they think about the paper applications. At every one that I attended that question was asked. All of them said they greatly preferred the online applications and would scan the paper application into their system. They felt the scanned applications were harder to read and strongly advised using online.

a few colleges i applied to made you pay an application fee if you used paper – online was free

I’m using a demo version of PDFpen. It took some practice, but it didn’t take long to get the hang of it. I’m planning to go ahead and buy it.
