Applying wihout SATIIs

Hi,

Does applying without SATIIs hinder one's chances of admission, even if the applicant has a superb SAT I score?

Did anyone or do you know of anyone who got in without SAT IIs? Is getting in without SATIIs rare or commonplace?

Thanks!

i don't think it really matters. I took math1 and got a 760 and that was it. Some of my friends didn't take em and got in. I am sure a good score helps but UMD doesn't require any.

I didnt take em but had a good SAT I score and got into honors so i dont think it hinders your chances at all.

Thanks guys.

sure, if there is anything else you would like to know just ask.

I'm trying to decide if I want to take the SAT again in June (I'm taking it on May 6th) or the SAT Subject Tests (in June). The deadline for both (for June), the SAT and SATIIs, is April 28th. So I have to decide what I'll take in June before I take the May SAT - it's kind of hard since I don't know how I'll do on the May SAT.

Tentatively, I'm thinking it might be better to have one excellent SAT score than a bunch of so-so scores - even if it means to not submit SAT II scores. I don't think I'll have a chance to take neither the SAT nor the SATII again because I will be applying for Spring 2007, and it would be too late to take the fall tests (Nov. 1 is the deadline for me). Plus, early app. is encouraged.

I'm prepping really hard for the SAT, but it looks like two weeks is really not enough to finish quality preparing (I started about a week ago and I do it everyday).

Another way would be for me to register late after May 6th (late dead line May 10th) after I roughly feel how I do on the test. Then I can decide whether I'll take SATI again or SAT IIs.

hmmmm the spring admission makes it harder to take them later. If you really want UMD then I don't think SAT IIs should matter all that much. Are you a high school senior?? I think you should break a 1250 on the SAT to be in excellent positition with a decent GPA. Good luck

No, I'm not a HS senior. I took a year off after high school due to health reasons and other initiatives.

1250? Are u referring to old SAT. They don't even take it anymore. I'm aiming for a 2300+/2400 on the new SAT. I'll probably take the ACT too in June.

I know they don't take the old SAT, but i mean a 1250 on the M and Verbal. This year they only took new Sats but said they would disregard the writing. I don't know if it will be like that in Spring. If you get a 2300+ I seriously don't think they will care if you take a SAT II or not as long as you have decent HS grades. A 2300+ is full ride material

When I visited UMCP with my son (who is now a student there), the admissions officer running the information session was asked about SATIIs. His answer: "Take them if you want to, but we're not going to look at them."

That was three years ago, though. Things may have changed.

My son and I attended a prospective student information session on 4/12/06 at UMCP and the admissions rep also said on that day that they would not be considering SATII results even if a student took them and submitted them.

Was this an actual "adcom"/admissions officer who takes part in the admissions decisions?

Thanks.

Yes, the woman who ran the information session was an admissions officer who reads applications and makes admission decisions. Her exact words to the students in the audience were that students can take SATII Subject tests and submit the scores but "we won't look at them."

I should think a quick call the Admissions Office could help you verify this.

SAT IIs aren't a bad idea. I would recommend taking them if you fall under one of these categories:

Your SAT I scores are sub-par.

You would like to be accepted to an honors program.

My regular SAT score was 1310 (650 math and 660 verbal). It's not bad, but it's below the honors program's recommeded level of 1350. In June 2005, I took the US History SAT II, and scored an 800. Point is, I'm pretty sure they looked at it, despite what else you may have heard. I also got into the Honors Program....overall, I recommend at least one SAT II for everyone.

Are you a history major? Do you know if it's competitive or not to get into the history major? Do a lot of people apply with history as their intended major?

Just wondering since I'm assuming you're already at UMCP.

Thanks!
