Applying with a 3.51 GPA

Hello everyone,

It’s that time of year for all of you transfer students, application time!

I currently hold a 3.51 GPA at a CC and plan to submit a TAG, as well as, apply to a few other schools. I’m set on the school I intend on transferring too, however I’d like to reach for a few schools which include UCLA (Econ) and USC Marshall. I currently have 31 credits.

I am a Marketing Manager/Database Administrator for a local company in my area. I attended an Investment Conference in New Orleans (I’m from CA) as I do invest in my free time. I’m very interested in pursuing a career in investment banking and intend for my current GPA to go up.

What can I do to increase my chances amongst other competitive applicants and how is my current standing with a 3.51 GPA?

I plan on working extremely hard my second year at CC for internship purposes, but does a higher GPA in those semester have any affect on admission? It’s my understanding that my current GPA is the one that will be looked at which is discouraging being that I have a full year until I transfer.

Any suggestions, recommendations, schools I should look at are welcome! Thank you for all of your help!

You are applying to majors that are selective and usually admit a much higher GPA. Definitely find a major that you like that is in a TAG program so you have a safety. It is an uphill climb for the top tier UCs but the others may work. Check out UCI and UCR’s business major. I’m not sure what the average GPA is for Irvine’s biz admin, but you’re probably in the range for Riverside. And there are always some exceptions to the high GPAs across the board.
