Applying with a poor history

So some might be wondering what I meant with the title and I was wondering if anyone has some input or had a similar experience.

So here I go.

I did well in high school and attended a college but in my first year I suffered from some personal problems that really took a toll on me and I was also immature and eventually ended up leaving that college in the middle of the second semester. I was on academic probation for poor grades and housing probation for alcohol violations. I just want to make it clear I have never got in trouble with the law, have a record or did anything bad as in violent. It was just immature things that got me in trouble with RA's such as drinking and noise violation for music. Overall it was a poor experience and I took responsibility left the school and changed my life.

I then started to attend a community college and fast forward two years later. I have a 3.4 gpa with 54 credits and only 8 to go in my last semester left and my business professors view me as one of their best students. I am in great standing with the staff and school never having received any disciplinary action or ever put myself in that position again. Basically I grew up, fixed my problems and realized my education is the key to my future and would really like to purse my business career at a 4 year school.

Now obviously I have to send in all my transcripts even though I will not be transferring credits from my first college and I plan on applying to various state schools and private ones in the area nothing over my head though for someone with my GPA but obviously I have the poor history at that one college but I will be writing a letter accompanying my applications with a explanation and how I turned things around into a positive.

My question is will the admissions councilors understand that I had a low point in my life seeing past that and seeing that I turned everything around and did well for myself because I drastically improved? Do I have a chance and is this something that happens maybe not often but more than I think? I just really hope they look to how I improved.

It is much appreciated if anyone could help me out here.

The world doesnt expect 18 year olds to be perfect. You’ve corrected your course and many colleges will welcome you as a Jr transfer. Some really selective schools won’t.

Keep working hard and keep looking ahead.

What 4 yr school would you like to attend?

I am applying to some massachusetts state universities and colleges with University Massachusetts Amherst being my first choice and I have a slight advantage with members of my family graduating from there.

I am also applying to SUNY Albany, WNEC, Bentley, Quinnipiac and maybe some others.

I am not applying to what people would mostly call really selective schools and I feel like the ones I am choosing to apply to are suitable for my resume and 3.4 GPA.

Thank you for your response though it helps put my mind a little at ease because I hope they would see past my previous mistakes and realize I have put myself on a good course.
