Applying without 4 years language nor calculus

My d18 applied rd. We live in the south and haven’t visited. I was looking at Wesleyan admission info and it says they expect students to have taken four years of foreign language and math thru calculus (among other things obviously). My d took only three years of Spanish and is taking statistics instead of calculus. She is not a stem type kid. She has taken 6 APs. She has a 4.0 GPA and a 31 ACT. My guess is that we should expect this one to be a rejection.

I think she may have a good chance. Wesleyan only RECOMMENDS not REQUIRES any of the specified subjects.

Look at this link – https://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg02_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=205

Four years of math, foreign lang etc are recommended not required.

She might have a chance at Wesleyan. To improve her chances, if she were my child, I would look very carefully at Wesleyan and see what is unique about that school. Then I’d see if DD could tailor her application to fit that, highlight the areas that naturally mesh. If she can do an interview and reiterate those areas, so much the better. If WU allows her to submit additoinal things, consider creating a resume. That is one way to speak directly to the adcoms about who she is and how she fits in. On grown up resumes you just list the stuff that you did. On this kind of resume, go onto the second page, and before each heading feel free to write 1-3 short sentences explaining what was fulfilling to your DD about that activity or work experience. If you can tailor it to Wesleyan’s culture, so much the better.

Be sure to also communicate explicitly to the adcom that Wesleyan is her first-choice school, if indeed it is.

Best of luck.

Does the 4yrs have to be in the same language, or does something like 2 yrs Spanish, 2 yrs Latin work?

I would not assume rejection. There are many factors considered, and, as pointed out, the courses are not required. The admissions officers will view your daughter’s application in its entirety, considering the opportunities available to her at her school and how she took advantage of them and excelled in classes.

That said…

Their admitted student data show 85%+ of students taking calculus, 4 years FL, and the trifecta of bio/ chem/ physics. Since they publish that fact, it matters somewhat to them. But it matters in the aggregate, not for any one student per se.

Solely because those three things are highlighted by Wesleyan in their brochures, and Wesleyan was one of his top choices, my son took physics senior year! Ironically, he ended up not even applying to Wesleyan because he got into another college early decision. But he is enjoying the physics class, so it worked out well anyway!

It means level 4 in one language.
Can you list what she’s taken for each academic area:
English/humanities
Math
Social science/history
Science
Foreign language
HS graduation requirements
Personal picks

We’ll tell you how rigorous it is for Wesleyan.

Thanks but she ended up withdrawing her application. She decided on another school

Oh, she was admitted ED or ED2 somewhere? Congratulations!! One less worry! On with preparing for “leaving the nest/taking flight”

She applied EA and got in with great merit money to University of San Francisco. She loved it when she visited and couldn’t see herself liking anywhere more so she decided she was done!

Thanks!

Congratulations to her!
