I am going to apply to Mudd (Regular Decision) but I only looked into the interview details just now and it seems like interview requests are over…

(I live on the East Coast so an on-campus interview isn’t really viable for me.)
How badly will this impact my application? Though they technically aren’t required the website makes interviews seem very important
“Interviews are not an application requirement, but are highly encouraged. A written record of the 20–30 minute conversation is added to your admission file and provides an opportunity for you to add a personal touch to your application.”
I have a lot of other places I’m applying to so I won’t be devastated to hear that it’ll have a major impact on my standing, so whatever your honest opinion/knowledge is feel free to say it. Thanks
If you look on the college data profile for Harvey Mudd, the interview is marked as “considered” not “very important” so I think it probably depends on how strong/unique your application is otherwise. Obviously, if you miss the chance to add the personal touch of an interview, it will be extra important that your essays really convey who you are and how you would contribute to the community. Two real downsides that I can think of are: 1. Missing the chance for the school (and you) to help determine fit with this very unique school and 2. Chance for you to demonstrate interest in the school. If you are very interested in HMC, maybe it would be worth calling admissions and asking if there is a wait list for interviews if someone else should cancel. My son (who is currently a freshman at HMC) did a Skype alumni interview because we live too far from anywhere they were offering in person interviews. On the other hand, by the last sentence of your post, I am sensing that you really aren’t all that interested in HMC. If that’s the case, then just roll the dice and see what happens.
I agree, I don’t think it will be held against you. I would also add that since you do live so far away it’s even less likely to be held against you.
It isn’t very important. But it is important to show “fit” at Mudd. If you haven’t been able to visit, review the website, admissions blogs, etc carefully to get a feel for it before finalizing your application.
For them, it is not crucial. That is measured as a plus as I heard from the AO, but largely depending on how you performed in it.
