<p>From my understanding, depending on the university, certain topics may be required while others may be optional. However, these essay topics seem to not be tailored to a particular university. So for example, you should be able to write an essay using Topic A, and have it apply to all universities that require that particular topic.</p>
<p>I believe you can open an account at any time. However, this does not mean that you can apply at any time. This is dictated by each university’s admissions guidelines.</p>

<p>The ApplyTexas common app opens today, August 1st, for the Fall '14 semester. Schools such as UT and A&M have a deadline of December 1st, so if you waited until January you would be out of luck!</p>

<p>You absolutely want to apply before January if at all possible. Many schools have a deadline before January 1st. I recommend getting everything completed by November 1st.</p>
<p>I was told that for transfer students the application process starts in Jan, whereas for incoming freshmen it began Aug 1.</p>
