[AppMath]CMU v.s. UMD v.s. RICE

Hi guys, I have received three offers(all PhD Programs):
Applied Mathematics @ Carnegie Mellon
Applied Math, Statistics and Scientific Computing @ University of Maryland
Computational and Applied Math @ Rice University

Does anybody know detailed information about these programs? It's hard for me to make the decision. I appreciate your kind help!

Do your best to attend their student weekends. You’ll have a chance to meet professors you’re interested in working for, get to see a bit of each city, and hopefully figure out where you want to go.

thx for your reply, RacinReaver. I know it’s best to meet the professors and students before making the decision. However I’m an international applicant living outside the United States. It seems impossible for me to take a journey to any of these schools…

Ahh, fair enough!

I think your best bet would be to try and have a phone interview at some point with the various professors you’re interested in working for. I know it can be a bit pricy, but you might be able to do something via skype or other cheaper means.

I’d say the best place to go is where ever you can find the most faculty members doing research you’re interested in. Maybe ask some faculty members in your current (applied) math department and see if they know of anyone specializing in the stuff you’re interested in at those schools.

I’d say CMU is the best choice of those three for applied math and/or statistics.
