Appointments - Class of 2012

My daughter just received her appointment to USNA as a member of the Class of 2012 in today's mail. The offer of appointment is dated 10 Oct 2007.

:) :) :)

Congratulations. Great News. All the best and Go Navy!!!

Great news the MOC's in Ohio haven't even interviewed here yet. Was your daughter's nom from another source?

She has a Presidential nomination.

None of the MOCs for our area have conducted interviews yet; there are still accepting applications through the end of this month. And to add a twist to the whole process, our Representative, Jo Ann Davis, passed away last weekend. So technically, we don't have a Congressional Representative at this time.

Congratulations on dd's Appointment!!!

Our first MOC deadline for applications was just today (dd's has been in forever, it seems), so no interviews until mid-November. Our Senators' deadlines are even later.

GreatAmerican,
Sincere congratulations to your outstanding daughter on her early appointment to the United States Naval Academy Great Class of 2012! Wonderful news!

Hey there GA - I'm tryin' to send you a PM and your inbox is full! :)

Congratulations to you and your daughter. I am sure that she is an outstanding candidate to get such an early appointment!

3 cheers for GA Girl!! She should be very proud, Mom and Dad too! :) Will she wait to hear from other universities or is Navy IT? Congratulations all around!

USNA is my daughter's first choice. However, she is working on a Navy ROTC backup plan in case, God forbid, something happens to preclude her induction into the academy next June.

Yipee!! Hope she gets there. Being a 'legacy dad' is alot of fun, we've learned it first hand!!!!

^^^^ITA :) We love the legacy perks! You will too. Very smart young lady to have a 'just-in-case' plan in the wings.

Just curious why that should make any difference once at USNA. Are not all Midshipmen treated equally no matter what their "heritage" is? Can understand a Prior being font and center but a legacy?

Congrats to your Daughter GA! :)
Good to have backup plans. Just curious as to those schools.

Everyone gets treated the same - "poorly" during the first year... ;)

It's probably more fun for us as legacy parents than it is for the kids; gives you yet another bond with your son/daughter. Being id'ed as a legacy isn't always great for the legacy mids, especially if mom or dad is a senior officer. Rightly or wrongly I always felt that more was expected from those kids, because they have at least some knowledge of the Navy or Marine Corps. No "special" attention is welcome during Plebe Summer or Plebe Year.

I wasn't a legacy or Navy Junior. I found a couple of Napsters and soaked up as much as I could from those "salty dogs" - especially when it came to rack-making, shoe shining, and room cleaning. Those guys were veritable fonts of knowledge, but there was also a lot of pressure on them to act as good examples for us to follow.

Had my dad been a Captain/Colonel or Admiral/General, I think Plebe year might have been even less pleasant than it was. "Oh, so your daddy is a Captain, is he? I guess you think you're hot stuff, huh, Mister..." ;)

How does the cadre or during the academic year Upperclass even know that a plebe is a legacy? Do they have access to their files or is it purely word of mouth?

Friends son at WP had active duty General's daughter in same squad* during plebe* year, he visited often - was not a good experience for any in the squad*, let alone this young lady.

*Not sure of correct terms at WP

I can't speak for what will happen now with a new Supe...but I can tell you what Class of 2010 legacy folk experienced. You have to know that we had no idea there were 'perks'. At Plebe Parent Weekend we got a special invitation to a party at the Alumni House - open only to Alumni and legacy families. We met many legacy families including Sharon Disher - who has twins in 2010. Sharon is one of the original female class, and wrote "First Class". We also received and attended the Superintendant's Home for a private breakfast. Only the highest ranking friends and Academy folk and legacy parents attended. I never dreamed we'd be invited to spend about 2 hours in the Supe's home as lowly Plebe parents. Neither did hubby. But I enjoyed relaxing in the family room having a one on one time with Admiral Rempt's wife. I looked over all her family photos and we talked about each one. I also had never been in the presence of that much military brass from every single branch of the military - clearly up from Wash DC for the breakfast party. Then both at PPW and again at Hernon Week legacy parents get special seating assignments for the formal dress parade. We sat in comfortable shade with pre-seating relaxation instead of beating the crowds for a good seat. We met up with many legacy families under the canopy.

I have to say I enjoyed this - and yes, it's a perk - but I will never make that an issue with other families. I know that 'pride comes before a fall' and the last thing I want to do is sound like a boasting idiot.

I am simply answering that - in the past- at times USNA went out of their way to honor legacy families and while I appreciated the honor - if it never happens again we will be just as happy, just as grateful and just as proud of our daughter and her decision to attend USNA and serve our great country.

Oh....and if a mid has ANY brains at all - this whole 'legacy' thing is NEVER MENTIONED by them. Any hint of bilgeing one's classmates would be immediately dealt with. My kiddo never mentions it . It comes in the same category if a mid came with either prior enlisted experience, or NAPS or ROTC or came from a steller CAP or JrROTC background. No one cares about your past - it's the NOW that counts so the basic attitude is: shut up and do what you're told to do

I have no idea if the Cadre knows these facts about their charges. I am in contact with one former Class of 2007 Cadre - it's an interesting question to ask sometime.

Just curious why that should make any difference once at USNA. Are not all Midshipmen treated equally no matter what their "heritage" is? Can understand a Prior being font and center but a legacy? ...

Peskemom means that having a legacy midshipman is funs for the parents not the midshipman. All plebes are treated equally in that they get the mushroom treatment. Don't forget that VADM Fowler is running a benevolent dictatorship. :D

Backups include: RPI, UVA, George Washington, University of South Florida (Clearwater Christian), Pensacola Christian.

Is USMA out of the picture now? Has she considered it might be easier to get medical school directly from USMA than from USNA? ;)

My daughter still has an LOA from West Point but USNA is her first choice. USNA to USUHS to Medical Corps; at least that's her plan.

Congrats. Don't think I've heard of anyone getting an appointment this early. A real tribute to your daughter and her family.
