Appointments

any appointments ??

I'm 99.9999% sure I will be going to the CGA this year, I just did my over night visit this past week, and it was great. To be honest I liked it alot more than the AFA or WP.

I was notified last week about mine...I am waiting to hear from USNA then I will decide what to do. Good luck to you and others who are waiting.

hi i applied for early action to the coast guard but got defered...the thing is i had to call them up to find out the status of my application...they never sent me my deferment letter. so i didn't find out i was deffered until mid February. My question is when should be the time when i should start worrying if I haven't heard from the academy yet? I mean I'm worried my address might be inputted in the computer wrong or something..and i'm worried to call so soon because then they may see me as trying to rush them. so what's a good date to start worrying if i haven't heard yet? I saw on their website that the final day of sending out notices of appointments is June 01, but to me that doesn't make sense because the national deadline for accepting/declining other offers is May 1st. I don't want to be notified that I got into the Coast Guard after I've already accepted admission somewhere else. The academy is my first choice at the moment....but I'm worried I'll be notifyed too late.

The reason why the CGA does that is b/c some people who recieved appointments decide not to go, and out dead line is may 1st. However, by law/regulation, they MUST have at least a certain number of cadets in the Corps, so as people mail in their 'sorry don't wanna go to the cga' letters, more room becomes available in the corps, hence more letters of appointments go out after may 1st. However I wouldnt bank on it b/c statistically, last year 420 or so were offered appointments, and 300ish accepted

What I would do and what I did (just incase god forbid something happens during swab summer) is send in your deposit to one of the other colleges you were accepted to as 'insurance'

the application dead line was March 1st, and the admissions after EA is on a rolling bases, so the academy will probably send out a bulk of the appointments soon. However if you're still deferred, I would say you will probably won't hear anything until may 1st

thanks. that explains a lot. if i don't get into coast guard i'm applying to the local community college do to finnancial reason, so paying my fees as insurance aren't that big of a deal since it's like only 30 bucks ;). thanks for the fast response.

in my opinon, I would say the USCGA is THE toughest military academy to get into. For a few reason, Because it's a DIII school it's not allowed to recruit for athletic reasons. The other academies are known to recruit for athletics. Since there is no nomination process, and no specific quota system (which the 3 big academies put a big emphasis on) every one in the nation is competing against each other strictly on merit. Plus just look at the statistics 7% acceptace rate! that's unheard of! except for specialty schools such as juliard. So all of you guys who got in congrats! it's quite an accomplishment!

I agree with most of what you say...however I must correct you on one thing. Div. III colleges CAN recruit athletes; they are restricted on things like paying for visits to campus and they cannot give out scholarships per se. I know because I am one of those who have been contacted by the football and track coaches.

Yes, dd has been contacted about cross-country...

Sorry, I guess I phrased it wrong, I know DIII schools can recruit, but what they have more restrictions... and since they are DIII, they are not as big as the other academies on recruiting... (I've been contacted by the wrestling coach also)

One advise that alot of the cadets gave me during my over night visit, was to pick up a copy of "Running Light" during your visit to the CGA. It can be found at the excahnge. This is a book that you will pretty much have to memorize during your swab summer, and picking up a copy and getting an early start will help you out alot.
