Appositives Question

I know this isn't tested on the SAT, but I was wondering if anybody could shed some light on this matter.

Does an appositive have to be directly adjacent to the noun it is modifying? (Let's assume that the word "which" isn't included)

For example:

Which of the two following sentences is "more" correct?

I wanted to join X Club last semester, a club known to be very social.
OR
I wanted to join X Club, a club known to be very social, last semester.

I would assume that the latter sentence is indeed more grammatical, but is there anything wrong with the way the first sentence is built?

Much thanks, in advance.

Both sentences are grammatical. Only when there is ambiguity is there a problem. It is clear what “a club known to be very social” is renaming in the first sentence, so you wouldn’t think twice about its placement. So no, an appositive does not have to be next to a noun it is modifying, and it isn’t always better when it is.

Hit the nail on the head. Thanks~
