approaching potential supervisors

Err.. this is a hard one in my opinion. I know that some people try emailing the profs or grad students, and try to get to know them. But is that overdoing it? What is the best way to get noticed by the potential supervisors? Reading their publications and asking them questions? It seems like the purpose of that would be almost too obvious, unless you have a really good question to ask.

I think many people in this forum are either unsure of their supervisors yet (don't be offended, that's just the impression I got). When do you officially choose your supervisor and how do you make sure that you can get a good supervisor? I'm just looking for some personal stories.

Thanks folks,
