Alright, so I am doing an internship with a minor league baseball team in my hometown this summer. As part of the internship I write for the teams website. On somedays, I see the teams play by play announcer around the stadium or press box. Since I am considering a career as a sports broadcaster, and I already work for my schools campus radio station announcing games and such, I was wondering what is the best way to approach the play by play announcer, in terms of asking for advice, or that kind of thing. Ultimately, my goal is to get to know him well enough to feel comfortable asking him to be a reference on my resume, but obviously that will not happen overnight, so how should I gradually approach this?

Just go up and introduce yourself and talk a bit about the game, then gradually say something along the lines of “i really appreciate what you are doing up here, as a fellow announcer i know how hard it can be sometimes.” Then he can start asking questions about you. Its much easier to talk about yourself I find.

Do you have a mentor? This is something you might want to ask him. Its pretty much all similar to every field though. I’d just talk to him, strike up a conversation about sports. Eventually when you talk to him enough that you are comfortable talking with him, segway into talking about his profession/job. The other approach is to be up front from the beginning, just ask if its hot in the announcers box, and that you are working towards that end.

I disagree with using the term “as a fellow announcer…”. I think that sounds fairly pretentious if you’re trying to ask him for advice leading to a reference. maybe say something similar but use “as a student learning about/interested in/etc…” instead.

^ Yea, it does sound pretentious. It’d be like if I walked up to Robert DeNiro or any great actor and be like, “You knows, I was in my schools 6th grade play, so I know how tough it is.”

Yeah…I didn’t really read it that way, but you are right. Sports is a better idea.

Really thought this thread was going in a different direction when I read the title.

Start talking about baseball with him, and if you can guide the conversation toward you wanting to be an announcer someday. You’ll be around him quite a bit so you don’t have to do it all in one day, just start talking to him. Never know what he’ll be able to tell you. I mean, no offense but it’s a minor league announcer, not exactly Harray Caray up there.

Woah I’m glad this isn’t what I thought it was about.

Just talk to the guy about the game. Eventually tell him that you want to be an announcer and ask him about where he went to college, etc.

LOL!

Not that there’s anything hard about the job of a person getting paid millions for a relatively small about of work.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought this thread was about approaching hookers…
