Appropriate Attire for Dance Classes

Hey Prof. Himmelheber! I’m an incoming freshman at CSUF, and I’m getting very excited about coming to Fullerton in about three weeks! I was just wondering, what sort of things should I be packing for my dance classes? I’m taking Ballet I and Tap I my first semester, so obviously I’ll be needing those two pairs of shoes. Are there certain color requirements or specific types of shoes that I need to get? Thanks for your help!

Hi, Estrella, and welcome to CSUF!

You may have professors who require black leotard and pink tights for ballet, though I don't believe this is the case with any of our profs (maybe only with adjunct, part-timers). So bring your tights, leotards, and enough of each to make it through the week without having to do laundry too often.

On the shoes, bring character shoes in whatever color(s) you have. You may want to audition for Front & Center (held off-campus in February). It's a paying gig, and you will be asked to have both tan and black shoes for this (same goes once you are in the BFA). A lot of the girls are choosing T-straps (for security or aesthetic?), but this isn't required.

A dance rehearsal skirt is always helpful - you can use these at callback dance calls, if you desire; also, as a rehearsal skirt (if required).

You may also want to bring your cover up clothes - layers to wear when it is cold in the studios and/or outside. Things like shrugs, sweat-shirts, hoodies, gauchos, cut-off sweat pants, leg warmers, etc. Functional rather than aesthetic.

And bring your mini-screwdriver (for taps) if you've got it! If you do, you'll make a lot of friends really fast, as many don't have them (being unfamiliar with the nature of the beast).

See you soon,

Thank you for your help! This is definitely useful, I'm going to get another pair of character shoes today!

This is the info I prepared for students who inquire about dancewear and local suppliers with discounts:

Each dance instructor has their own clothing requirements/preferences...they will let you know at the first class. But all will require the appropriate footwear. Also, girls may want to buy both black AND tan colored character shoes – in the event you are cast in Front & Center (a paying off-campus gig in February, directed and choreographed by outside professionals and musical directed by our own Mitch Hanlon), you will need both; and once in the BFA, you will need both. T-strap or traditional really doesn’t matter; but our current BFAs have tended to get tan t-straps and black traditional (at the minimum).

For dancewear, there are several places close to campus that offer student discounts:

There's a student discount at:

I think there's also a student discount available at:

I'm not sure about a student discount, but this store is close to Fullerton (La Habra) and has a website: http://www.discountbooteryanddancewear.com/

Hope this helps,

Hey Professor,

I was wondering what the dress attire is for the acting program? I'm packing and getting ready to go, so your help would be greatly appreicated. Thanks so much!

Oh, crud! I just logged on and noticed this email - I didn't receive notice that there was a post. Sincere apologies!

Most acting classes will want comfortable clothes suitable for movement, and closed-toe shoes (for safety) - like tennis shoes, character shoes, etc.

No color requirement for clothing in acting classes.
