Appropriate Person to Ask for a Scholarship Recommendation Letter

I recently began my second semester of college. I have applied to a great deal of private scholarships and I continue to do so, but recently I have come across many that require a letter of recommendation. Currently, there are no professors or faculty that I am close to or that have a true understanding of my future goals/plans (I’ve recognized this as an issue and I am planning to further invest myself into developing relationships). I was planning on asking my high school counselor to provide a recommendation letter but I am concerned that doing so may not reflect positively on me (i.e. college student still referring back to a high school counselor). She knows me very well and is capable of writing a recommendation that reflects me. Would having my counselor provide a letter of recommendation harm my chances of obtaining certain scholarships? Between my essays and academics, I believe I have a decent chance but this factor has become a source of concern.

Most college students have a faculty member assigned as their Advisor, that has to approve class choices, etc - do you? Even if you don’t feel you know them too well, make an appointment to see her/him again, share that you are pursuing scholarships to help you with funding for next year, and ask about the LoR. You might be pleasantly surprised.
