Appying to NYU! Chance me?

Of course, I know there's no definite way to determine whether or not I'll be accepted, but I feel that hearing from actual NYU students would help give me a idea at least. :)

(Oh, and I'm not sure how much it matters, but I'm from San Diego, California.)

Stats:

Weighted GPA: 4.7 (currently but will be raised because I'm taking 3 more AP classes this year)

Currently ranked number 8 in a class of about 550 (I think; I'd need to check)

I've taken all honors (except classes like Spanish where you can't take honors at my school) and by the time I graduate, I will have taken 6 AP classes (including taken AP Senior English [or AP English Literature] in my sophomore year.) I've gotten 5's on all my AP tests so far as well.

Finally, my SAT score was 800 Writing, 740 Critical Reading, and 600 Math (overall, 2140).

Extracurriculars:

Organizations/Activities:

1.) Affinity Independent Film Company (freshman - senior year)
-Acting (starred in one independent film and a cameo in another)
-Cinematography (two independent films)
-Creative consulting (three independent films)

2.) Animation Appreciation Club (freshman - senior year)

3.) Newspaper Club (freshman year)
-Staff writer for the school newspaper

Community Service:

1.) Drama-coaching middle school students for play productions for two summers

2.) Participated in two episodes of a local television program called "Today's Family" as a guest speaker

3.) I may begin assisting teachers at an elementary school for this year or volunteer for the Secular Humanist Association's secular humanism Sunday school. [Do you think one is more impressive than the other? I'd like to do both but probably won't have time.]

Unusual Hobbies:

1.) Scriptwriting (created and have been writing scripts for two original television series for the past 9 years)
2.) Playwriting (one play written)
3.) Songwriting (have a small portfolio of lyrics I've written over the past four years)
4.) Poetry (fairly large portfolio of poetry I've written)
5.) Singing

Special Events:

1.) Junior Honor Guard (top ten students in my class). Did flag duty during last year's graduation and helped with the Senior Banquet (both for community service as well.)

2.) Won third place in Voice of Democracy competition

3.) Won local poetry competition twice

I think that's about it. I feel I may be forgetting something, but...anyway, I'd really appreciate any feedback about my chances of getting in and any advice you have to offer! Thank you so much for your time.

Also, on the NYU application, I didn't actually see any place where an applicant is supposed to list their extracurriculars and community service. Does NYU not require this or am I not looking in the right place?

What school are you applying to?

Tisch. But I was asking how high my chance was of getting into NYU at all first. :)

It depends 50% on your portfolio, 50% on your grades.

^Portfolio to get into NYU at all? Or are you talking about Tisch?

“Tisch. But I was asking how high my chance was of getting into NYU at all first.”
The bar is set at a different level for each school. For example, it’s harder to get into Stern than CAS. When you apply to NYU, you apply to a specific school.

^Oh, I see. So you fill out the normal NYU application and then send your portfolio into the school you’re applying to?

So, what do you guys think my chances are for getting into Tisch? (just for the academic part because you can’t judge my portfolio obviously! :P)

You don’t apply to NYU, you apply to an NYU school. If that school requires a portfolio, then you send one. IIRC, you can only apply to one school per application year.

Your academics are fine, but Tisch is much more about the portfolio. The only people who can judge that are the people who work in the Tisch admissions office, so chance threads for Tisch are mostly an exercise in futility.

^Okay. NuclearPakistan (above) said it was 50% based on grades, 50% on portfolio. But you’re saying that’s not really true? What would you say the percentage was? There will probably be plenty of people submitting good portfolios, so do they use academics to ultimately choose amongst those who did submit good portfolios? Or could someone get into Tisch with an amazing portfolio and poor academics?

“You don’t apply to NYU, you apply to an NYU school.” - that’s right. each school look at different criteria…

if you are considering tisch, i think that once you make the minimum academic requirements (which i think you have) the deciding factor then become your portfolio.

hope that helps.

you HAVE to declare a major to apply to Tisch or Steinhardt. there’s no way around it. that’s why people are saying that you need a portfolio, because most Tisch majors need a portfolio or an audition.

NO someone cannot get into Tisch with a great portfolio and poor grades/test scores. You always hear these kind of urban legends about a kid in Drama with a 1240/2400 SAT or a dance major you almost flunked out of high school, but I have not found any of those people yet. First the reps from your major go through your portfolio or your audition, then they send the ones they like over to admissions, then admissions decides if they’re good enough to go to NYU. Yes, Tisch is an arts school. But it’s still a school. Your grades matter.

From your stats, if your portfolio is good enough, you’ll get in. If you’re doing Dramatic Writing (which I assume based on your “unusual hobbies”), don’t submit any of your poetry or songs. They won’t like that at all. Submit your plays and screenplays instead.

Ah, okay, thanks for the info, guys! :)
