Appying with BFA Acting Major Intended

Hi! I'm Emily, I'm new here. I'm a high school senior and I'm doing my college applications with the intentions of getting a BFA in Acting, but I have quite a few questions that I'm sure you all could help me out with. My goal is to audition BFA, but if I'm not accepted anywhere I'd like to get a BA in either acting or general theatre and go on to get my MFA. I'm looking for colleges that have good BFA programs, and not necessarily known for their name (ie. NYU) but that have good programs, offer good training, and have high success rates of their graduates. After doing some research for the past year or so, I composed a list of colleges I'd like to apply to/audition for (in no specific order):

FSU
Emerson (although I'm not sure whether or not they offer a senior showcase. and even so, should that make a difference in my decision or not to apply there? are senior showcases very beneficial? also, I hear they do "restructuring"...what exactly does that entail?)
Mary Mount Manhattan (is their program actually any good?)
Rutgers
DePaul (though i know about the "cut"; do most BFA programs cut people?)
NYU
SUNY Purchase (though i feel their program may be more film intensive. I am more interested in theatre acting; would Purchase therefore be a good choice or no?)
Roosevelt

Also, I'm stuck in Orlando, FL though I would love more than anything to attend college in the Northeast. However, out of state tuition is obviously a problem. If anyone knows if any of the schools on my list or of any other schools that are more generous than others in giving money to students, that information would be greatly appreciated. My academics are very strong; I'm in the top 5% of my class, however my SAT and ACT scores are not that great, so I'm not sure I would qualify for most academic scholarships.

Anyways, if anyone has any information on the benefits of BFA programs, on the schools I listed, or on schools I should add to my list that have good programs, I would greatly appreciate it. Information on obtaining money for school would be great as well. In general, any feedback would be simply wonderful. Thanks for reading!

I know people at University of Central Florida in both the BFA Acting and MT programs and are very happy. It may also be worth looking at for an instate option.

Senior Showcase – can be useful, but I think it is more a factor to consider when deciding between programs to which you have been accepted, rather than applying only to programs that have a senior showcase. Admission to BFA programs is very competitive… and some BFA programs that have a showcase require students to audition to participate in the showcase, and only take a small number of students, so it may be better to think of a senior showcase as icing rather than the whole cake :).

Cuts – Most BFA programs have some sort of evaluation that happens at the end of freshman and/ or sophomore year… some schools will cut to a specific number of students regardless, other schools will only cut students who are not performing up to a specific standard, other schools give students the option of moving into a less performance oriented track for their final years of training, etc… It is important to ask each school what their policy is for cuts and evaluations.

Financial Aid – here are some recent discussion about financial aid –

BA Programs – you do not have any non-auditioned BA programs on your list… possibly FSU (if you can apply to both the BA and BFA programs), because I think their BA is a non-auditioned program. You are going to want to find a few non-auditioned academic AND financial safety schools to add to your list. These should be schools that you would be happy to attend.

Good luck!
