April 2011 ACT Thread

Hey I am taking the ACT w/Writing this April, along with many of you for sure. How are you preparing? What do you think you will score? What are your best/worst sections??

I’m also taking it in April.

I took a timed practice test from the book and got the following scores:

English–31
Math–29
Reading–31
Science–27

However I took them at different times (like English on Monday, Math on Tuesday etc. but I kept to the timelimits.)

What was your strategy for the Reading? I can’t get past a 22 on it and its really bringing my composite down!

Say it back to yourself and see if it makes any sense. The toughest part with the reading is assessing the content and changing word choice and decision making for that part.

I got 32, 27 29 and 31. So pretty much a 28 overall.

Took 3-4 practice tests from the red book and the act yearly practice tests average scores around:

English:33
Math: 36
Reading: 35/36
Science: 35/36

Composite: 35

Hopefully I get lucky on the real test and get a 36! As for reading, I skim the passage, answer all the detail questions and then read over the passage again very quickly to answer the general questions.

I have a rule of always doing the fiction part last. Start off with social science/humanities, science. They pretty much list facts.

I read half the passage, then look for which questions I can answer, then go back to reading. If you do this, you can easily eliminate two answer choices (or in my case, three).

My problem is in the science. Time is a *****. But I go the opposite of what most say. You can rush through data representation, but not fighting scientists. Do fighting scientists and experiments first. It brought my score up SEVEN POINTS.

I took the ACT for the first time this past February.
English: 29
Math: 22
Reading: 28
Science: 25
Writing: 27
Composite: 26

I am taking it again on the ninth of this month (April), but I’m REALLY hoping for at least a 28. My worst subject in the universe is mathematics, and science isn’t really my best either. Reading, writing, and english are my best, and I really need help with preparing for the math and science portions. Any suggestions? I bought the ACT Prep Book “For Dummies” off of Amazon.com and it is very helpful. I took a few practice tests in there before taking that ACT in February, and I definitely think it helped me in receiving the 26. Not a horrible score, but not exactly what I was hoping for. I need at least a 28 for the Florida Bright Futures 100% scholarship that I want to be elligible for. Anyone have any tips or suggestions in regards to the math and science? I’m desperate and will try anything! :)

^ 100 percent? I wish :(

[Bright Futures scholarship program faces $100 million funding cut - Sun Sentinel](http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2011-02-28/news/fl-bright-futures-20110227_1_bright-futures-state-universities-scholarship-requirements)

I’m also going for the 100% Florida Bright Futures! I would really, REALLY love it, but if not, I will make the 75% mark for sure. Isn’t it a 1270 SAT OR 28 ACT? Or do you have to make both?

And, I’m taking the ACT April 9 for the first time. I’m scared. I took an ACT practice test today and only got a 25…from what I’ve been reading, I think that’s “average,” but low by some CC standards. I got:
English: 29 (not including an essay)
Math: 23
Reading: 26
Science: 22

I’m more of an English girl myself…I’ve never been into, or been good at, science or math. But I’ll do whatever it takes to get that 28!

I’m also taking the April ACT for the first time. My biggest problem is probably finishing the Reading and Science questions in time (since I’m such a slow reader), so I’m doing a bunch of practice tests.

Hey! This’ll be my first ACT too! I’m also going for Bright Futures but I’m aiming for a 33 (UF’s minimun requirement for the Honors program)…

I just got Kaplan and am going to start that this week, so hopefully that’ll help (:

I got a 1930 on the SAT last month- what kind of ACT score does that translate to? That was my first SAT and I wanna retake it in June :\

I took a practice test from Kaplan and I did great on math but sucked in reading, which is totally opposite of my SATs! :open_mouth: Is that normal??

Good luck everyone!

Oh, that’s really cool since I just got the Kaplan ACT book too, and am starting this week. xD Hopefully I didn’t start too late.

And apparently, a 1930 SAT score equates to about a 28/36 on the ACT, according to this link: [1930 SAT Score](http://www.satscores.us/sat_scores_by_score.asp?score=1930) .

Thanks! Yeah, I’m kinda worried we started too late (did the same thing for SAT)

I agree that the practice tests are the key, but they just take so long! :frowning: Hopefully Kaplan will work! :)

If you did not start studying till now (I didn’t start till last week) focus on English rules and math formulas. Reading and Science you will get what you get. Focus on what can change.

Just find the essential stuff in the reading passages. I don’t read the entire passage first. Instead, as some of you may know, I use the Princeton Review method. That is, you underline the key words of the question, and then go to the passage to find those key words and read that segment.

Do any of you know how accurate are McGraw-Hill tests?

Whose taking the ACT in California? Jw

Printed out the official practice test from the ACT website and got:

34 Engligh
36 Math
35 Reading
33 Science

35 composite

How do you guys do so well on the Reading section? I mean I’m pretty confident that I can get above the 30’s with the other sections but I fail terribly on the Reading… (34 ACT when I go over 10mins… and a 27ish with real time…)
I’ve tried both tactics but I seem to fail on both of them…

Maybe I need to read more books?

I also have some trouble with the Reading section, but I suppose one thing to keep in mind is that the correct answer will always have some basis in the passage. Personally, after a few tests I find that for me the factual Social Science and Natural Science passages are easier to comprehend, while the Prose Fiction and Humanities that are considerably more challenging, particularly inference questions. I always think the passage implies something when it isn’t directly supported by the passage, so I need to work on avoiding extreme answers.

For the reading section, I found that the most important thing is to first thoroughly read the passage, at a normal pace. I take like 5 min reading but then the questions look much easier.
