April 2012 Reading Discussion

why are people saying my username lol

For his stance, I put something else.
I did that because he did say he worked hard and did this and that…
If I can remember the answer choices…

@amazon, for the question about what he intentionally declined to answer, I put “he did not specify whether he, his father or his son had the most difficulty with the business”

I put was nehccire put for that one.

Was the answer to the english question in the cork one bulk???!?!?!?!?!?!

I actually put neutral for the tone one. .-. I thought that was the hardest question on the Reading. I put neutral since it said “overall,” and I felt like there was only one hint of admiration, whereas I could find borderline traces of skepticism.

Ultimately, though, I thought the Reading was kick-butt easy. There were SO MANY word-for-word answers! I had plenty of time too.

The cork passage! What did y’all say was the purpsoe of the last paragraph? Either C, listing products that can be manufactured from cork, or D, which was somethign about uses for corks? All I remember is they were very similar.

I put C) manufactured from corks but I wasn’t sure either

JordanSaidWhat I put neutral as well…hope we’re right

I put neutral because the author said she thought the paintings were brilliant but had a somewhat matter-of-fact tone when talking about the girl in the passage.

I’m pretty sure it was admiring because the author wrote how her feat to travel around was remarkable not just in any century but especially in her century.

@SimplyBMW I chose admiring for the same reason, but I’m not confident that it’s the correct answer.

If I remember, the word “brilliant” was used to describe to the colors used in the paintings. It was not the authors opinion about her work.

I am 99% sure that “admiring” is the correct answer. However, I also think/thought that “Hank the Tank” is the narrator of that other passage…

Any definitive answer on what the three most important qualities/characteristics of cork are? I really hate Social Science passages; they tripped me up in February and they tripped me up today.

@yolo - it was definitely C, the products. the only other answer that made sense was D, the ‘uses and potential uses.’ nowhere in there did it mention other potential, unrealized uses of cork.

@b0ner - the answer was WOOD.

@somebody - answer was niepce. hawthorne and the other answer were totally wrong. daguerro built off of niepce

@amazon - he avoided talking about who had the hardest time. he said ‘i cannot say whether the tribulations of my time were worse than my fathers’ or my son’s turn of the century something’ thus he directly avoided it.

for the one about the lily something botanist, was the purpose about ‘her accomplishments as a female botanist’ (B) or A? i put A

1)@somebody - answer was niepce. hawthorne and the other answer were totally wrong. daguerro built off of niepce

What was the question?

2)for the one about the lily something botanist, was the purpose about ‘her accomplishments as a female botanist’ (B) or A? i put A

I don’t remember reading about a botanist, which passage was that again?

I thought that he (the narrator) refused to take a stand on whether or not the family’s name change was warranted or not?

"…something all immigrants did…warranted or not…"

Ah! Maybe that’s him taking a stance. >_>

(Answer choice might’ve been worded differently…I thought he said that his son’s tenure at the head of the company was most difficult though? Maybe I’m imagining things.)

what were the answer choices for “which one does the battle guy refuse to elaborate upon”

@toby - the question was ‘who was the author suggest was the first to experiment with camera technology’ or something

the other passage was about the botanist/artist who traveled through south america, viewing metamorphoses and animals
answers were ‘her historical significance as a female botanist’ or ‘her position as an early researcher who later scientists elaborated off of’

@ppurple/raymond
choices that i remember that he ‘DIRECTLY refused to elaborate upon’

 • name change
 • his role in the business
 • who had the hardest time <- i said this.
 • something lololo

Jungah, I thought there was a part where the narrator said “I fear that my son might be more burdened than my father or I…” (Or something to that effect.)

“Sitting down to lunch…son pulls out cellphone, beeper, etc.”

It’s definitely not his role in the business though…he was clear about how he felt about that.

I stand by “name change,” but I sucked today, so I wouldn’t be too concerned if we have differing answers. :-)

i also put down name change
