April 4 ACT ----- English

if you type “merchandise is” into google you get 10 times more results than “merchandise are”

Think about it like this:

“The merchandise was spread all over the floor. It was a mixture of bait and hooks.”

“The merchandise was spread all over the floor. Them was a mixture of bait and hooks.”

I don’t remember that question. I probably put the former though.

idk11:
i understand what you mean completely but the second sentence you wrote… that wouldnt even be on the act unless you were correcting the grammatical issue of “them” cause that sentence, if it existed, would say “they were a mixture of bait and rocks”
but there is apparently a rule that says that the verb agreement with merchandise depends on its context. the context you provided would definitely be an “it” situation because there are two different sentences but on the act it was part of a dependent clause if im remembering correctly

really it’s completely up in the air. whatever act people. whatever

whats this bollox merchandise question that you guys are arguing over? i dont remember this…

Something like, “Whenever I see any merchandise out of place, I put it/them back.”

you know, now that I think about it, isn’t the noun of the sentece actually “any,” and not “merchandise” ?

Any is clearly an adjective in that sentence.

For that one, I just interpreted it as “Whenever I see any merchandise that is out of place,” so I picked the singular form lol.

What about the question in I think the fourth passage. I remember 2 of the choices because I couldn’t choose between them
a. It also
b. (forgot)
c. (forgot)
d. It thus

I put a. it also eventually because it was giving another description of I want to say an award, but I can’t remember. I did spend a solid minute debating over the question. Also yay for orange!

wat did you guys say on the question where you need to choose the best description of the merchandise in the fishing store?? i think one of the answer choices was that it appealed to vacationers as well as fisherman…

It also

10 char

I picked the one that had tons of items because it wanted the readers to get a visual.
It sounds something like…
The store was filled with nets, rods, worms etc…

Yes, I remember that they asked for “… specific…”

So it was the one that listed everything.

anyone else have an opinion?

Same - I chose the one with all the small SPECIFIC details

well that great because i said that too!!

it was kind of obvious, because the question was like, “Which one SPECIFICALLY LISTS the DETAILED CONTENTS of the store?”

A. The stuff in the store
B. The fishing rods, the fishing nets, the lure, the worms, the boat oars, and fresh fish.
C. The things that people buy
D. Things that other fishing stores sell too

re: “is merchandise plural” - the point wasn’t the word “merchandise,” the key was “any,” which gives you the clue it’s singular. therefore “it” had to be the right answer.

Where did you guys split the paragraph?

I chose the answer that was “after sentence 4, because it brings the focus back on ____.” But I was really unsure.

I think the other choices were
A. After sentence four, but for a different reason
C. After sentence five
D. After sentence five

yeah I chose what u chose

^it was brings back to focus on either that guy’s childhood or himself… i guessed on that one cause they were so close.
