April 4 ACT Writing Results

Who has received their score and did it help or hurt your composite?

the writing score does not affect the composite. i’m really not sure how the writing portion is viewed by colleges, they all say they want the act with writing but few say they consider writing…i think they are still assessing the role of the writing portion and collecting data .but right now…no effect on composite or in most cases admission

Thanks, parent. Yours is a good question: why require ACT w/ writing if it doesn’t impact the score? Do the AdComs still want to see which kids are scoring 10+ to make some final determinations about admissions in close cases?

i have 2 ideas on it, but no proof of either. 1. they want something to be comparable to the sat (which has an essay section) and more schools are accepting the act now and it is becoming more popular and possibly 2. to see if the essay on the act compares with essays written on applications…ie if a child scores poorly on act/sat essay but has a stellar essay on the application…was it really the child’s essay or parents? or private tutor? problem with that would be that the sat/act essay is very time limited and on a specific topic for which the child may not have any passion vs multiple drafts and prep on the college app.

More good points that make sense! I expect D will do quite well on her essays (she scored a 31 on English first try) and has always been a superior writer anyway.

We"re going on our first open house visit next month, with several more colleges to follow in the next 8 months, and we will have to ask the college reps!

congrats on your D’s score! essays will probably be my son’s weak point in this whole process, science on the other hand will be strong. we have done a few visits with more planned. for awhile i couldnt get him interested, now he keeps adding ones he wants to consider. wide range of choices, in state, large, small lac’s, oos state public and private.
