I’m going to the 16-17 one. It should be great!

Anyone going to the April 23, 24 overnight? Any suggestions on where parents could stay etc.? Thanks.

There aren’t many hotels in Hyde Park for some reason- the places I’d recommend are the International House (good for a quick, cheap stay in a dorm-style building where international students and grad students live)- information about reservations can be found here- ihouse.uchicago.edu .
There is also the Wooded Isle Suites, which is a bit less well-known, but is kind of an independent bed-and-breakfasty place on Stony Island, quite close to the UChicago campus. My best friend’s mom stays there every time she visits campus.

There is a Ramada hotel near the lakeshore, just a bit up from the Shoreland, but it’s, to put it plainly, kind of gross. It is decently inexpensive, but not really worth it. You can just as easily stay downtown at a variety of other hotels for a close, if not better, price- be sure to ask if they have a “college visiting special” or something when booking, as some hotels will give you a deal if you mention a college in the area. Not sure if UChicago has any specific hotels to work with, but it’s always worth a try. Campus is quite accessible from the #6 bus leaving from downtown, or from any Red Line station downtown, so don’t worry about staying downtown without a car. A cab to campus from most directly downtown hotels will be about $20.

I’m going to the April 16-17 overnight, too!

Hi guys,

I have to fly to Chicago, so I was wondering which airport in Chicago is most convenient to get to U. Chicago- (O’Hares, Chicago, or Midway) and the most convenient mode of transportation from the airport to the campus. I’ve been trawling across the Chicago website, but I’d appreciate input from anybody who has practical advice. Thanks very much!

lichi—Midway is the closest. About 8mins away. And there is hotel information too.
Found that here–>[url=http://www.chicagofertility.org/visitorInformation.htm]The University of Chicago Hospitals Section of Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility - Visitor Information/url

As for transportation there, I have no idea. Any ideas anyone.

Oh, does anyone have a remote/vague idea of what the schedule is going to look like/what we’re going to do?

They have itineraries on UChicago’s college admissions site, log in and click visiting and stuff.

Flying to Midway is DEFINITELY most convenient. You can take a cab to campus for about $17, or take the #55 or X55 bus directly from Midway to 55th and Ellis Avenue (you’ll wind up right next to the Ratner gymnasium) for $2.25, which takes about a half hour. Conversely, flying in to O’Hare is at least $60 for a cab to campus, or about $6 on public transit with a travel time of around 2.5-3hrs and a lot of transfering around.

why is uchic so damn cheap
cant even reimburse me for a plane ticket.
come on, economy’s tight these days.
w/e. im gonna drive up on my own. 500 freaking miles from TN

swen,

I think you answered your own question in the third line…
:)

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice! I’ll be booking my flight soon
Is anyone going to the April 23/24 weekend?

I’m going to the April 16th-17th one. really looking forward to it! does anyone know what we do once we’re with the students for the overnight portion of the stay? just chill with them in their dorms?

I’ll be there April 23/24 with my daughter. Looking forward to it.

There’s a lot of things to do- the admissions office and PSAC organize a load of events that you can take part in, ranging from a Recognized Student Organization fair where different clubs and groups on campus set up tables (and usually give out free stuff) so you can get a feeling for the amount and variety of activities on campus, performances by different music and a capella groups, dodgeball with Ted O’Neill and admissions counselors, and other normal campus activities, like a (free!) visit to Doc Films for whatever movie is playing that night. Sometimes houses will have special activities for prospective students the night of the overnight, and sometimes they won’t- different hosts also have different levels of enthusiasm for hosting prospective students, so sometimes your host may have a whole plan of awesome things to do, or sometimes they’ll have a midterm the next day and you’ll need to make yourself scarce. Either way, there’s plenty to be done after your host picks you up.

@UChicagoPSAC: Is there any way I can get an overnight stay or any program of that sort if I come to visit UChicago during Tuesday, April 7th? (I won’t be able to visit during the overnight program, unfortunately… >.<)

Basically, what things can I do coming on a day like April 7th?

Thanks! :)

Hey guys, I want to visit Chicago (I’m deciding between it and another school) but I’m not sure I can make it to one of the overnight stay weekends. I’m kind of asking the same question as azn4eyes is – if I visit during a different weekend or during a week how can I get mileage out of it? Will I be able to see campus/take dorm tours/etc?

You can do overnight stays on any weekday night during April, although you do need to register beforehand. Reservations may be made by calling 773-702-8650 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Central Standard Time. You should note that you’ll need to be able to make it to campus by 4:00pm the day of your overnight. Any night is fine- if you’re most interested in getting a feel for classes by sitting in on some, I’d recommend visiting any day BUT Friday, as Friday tends to have little variety for classes, or be a recitation session or perhaps a quiz day. If you’re interested in seeing what Chicago has to offer in terms of weekend-like activities or nightlife, definitely come on Friday. We’re not really a school known for our Tuesday parties :)

On tours and dorm tours- regular campus tours are only offered at 10:30 am and 1:30 pm on the weekdays. Unfortunately, if you visit on a weekend, you will not be able to take a traditional campus tour with a tour guide (although if you are friendly with a current student you may be able to coax them in to showing you around). Campus tours do not take you inside dorms, although we do talk about the housing system. To see dorms on the inside, you’ll need to either do an overnight stay (where you will see at least your host’s dorm, and perhaps some of their friends’ rooms if they have friends in other dorms) or come for a program day. If neither of these work out, check the blog! I’ve been doing a nearly-weekly blog posting on the Uncommon Blog, which you can find at collegeadmissions.uchicago.edu, called Dorm of the Day, specifically so you guys can see inside different dorms and see example rooms. Check the archives for back posts, but so far I’ve done a blog post with pictures of all dorms except Maclean and Broadview (which are coming up soon!)
While it’s no substitute for the real thing, it’s better than what you get from the housing office :)

PSAC:

My son will be attending the overnight event. One question: given that the first day event starts at 8 AM, isn’t it reasonable to also provide overnight hosting the night before the first day? Either that or start the first day event around noon so that there is ample time for students to fly in by an early morning flight and attend the event.

Why does U Chicago start the first day event at 8 AM (thus making it a requirement that the students arrive the night before) and yet NOT provide overnight hosting???

As it stands now, my son needs to fly the night before and stay in a local hotel by himself overnight, which would have been nice to avoid.

It seems like lack of consideration on the part of the University…
