My school offers a lot of APs but i made the mistake of only taking one (bio) out of two sophomore year and only one (chem) out of 4 this year (junior year). My non AP classes are all honors (besides electives) and i thought it wouldnt matter what classes i picked as long as I got good grades. Now i realize how much AP matters because it makes me more competitive.

1) Could I still get into the really competitive schools (UPenn, Cornell, Princeton, etc) with such few APs? (i have a 4.0 GPA and 34 ACT score and will most likely be valedictorian or #2 in my class)

2) If i take 4 or 5 APs (out of 6 possible APs) next year do you think it would make a big difference?

3) Do you think i should explain to colleges that i didnt realize i was making myself less competitive and that i am going to prove that i can handle the courseload/get prepared for college? and that i took electives i was passionate about, i.e. band, art, child psych
