aps....are they really that important?

Being in IB, im not taking AP tests. will this be held against me?

Also, ive heard that AP's dont even matter for admission, only for credit..is this true?

no, APs do matter for decision, both for taking them and the grade you got on them.

i meant AP tests not just AP's

I'm really curious, too, so I guess I'll bump you...I'm now a MEMBER!

buuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmmpppppppppp

colleges look at your AP scores too if they were from your freshman/sophomore/junior years. If you take AP tests in your senior year, then they can't look at your scores because you haven't taken them yet!

But if you are in IB classes and take IB exams, I'm sure they can more than compensate for AP's.

but i wont take IB tests until senoir year either...

ap courses don't make any decision. they matter for placement. in the ivies, if you get a 3 or below, you are just in the first "normal" class. now, it obviously doesn't matter because when you get to a certain tier of school, everything is "honors"

I think AP course grades matter more, as it's a true test of endurance. also, because AP courses are all standardized, you may have had a bad day or something and gotten a low score (1 or 2)...

I just shoot for 3s and above and hope for the best...

the sat matters more, but more importantly, an A in the AP class matters the most in my opinion.

~are you a Diploma candidate?
~do you mean state or private school admissions?

Without this info it is impossible to tell...

so.. let me get this straight. the ap TEST doesnt affect ADMISSIONS to colleges (ivy league) at all? they're just for credit in college? and what's the "normal" class? doesnt a 3 or lower just give u no credit

AP tests do affect admissions into college, just not as much as GPA, SAT,etc. However, if you have some B's in AP classes and can get a 5 on the exam, the effect of the B is less because you've proven that you understand the subject matter but maybe were in a class that practiced grade deflation.

AP tests are somewhat important in admissions, but it seems that success in AP CLASSES is more important. AP classes are supposed to simulate a college classroom and evironment, so performing well in an AP class definitely increases your admissions chances because your weighted GPA increases and colleges see you are taking the hardest courses you can. Then again, getting 5s on APs are an added bonus. If you are a candidate for an IB diploma, it probably has similar weight of APs in college admissions because arent they both supposed to be college like courses?

I think the score you earn on an AP test matters way more than the grade. I have a class at my school that kids take only to get the GPA boost since its such an easy A (no homework assigned, no class assignments..nothing).. come AP time these kids are SCREWED.. they learned NOTHING in their class yet still managed to get A's. I think AP score show exactly how much your teacher works with you and how motivated of a student you are.

AP Scores do affect admissions because they can suggest that you'll do well in college exams. That's why many college apps, especially for more elite scools, do ask you for AP scores. (Some, like MIT, even asks you for additional tests scores like the AIME). The way AP scores function on apps is similar to awards. If you have good scores, it's going to help you.

However, not having AP scores will not hurt you.

I'm a senior and have convinced myself that at this point no, they're not important in the least...

Maybe I should have studied.

What is the case with myself, if anyone knows?

Full IB Diploma Candidate

So far a 7 in Math Studies SL

Taking Chem SL, Japanese SL, Physics HL, English HL, History HL

Going to UPenn

No APs

I wish APs were more important than SATs (especially SAT I) because they reflect that a person actually KNOWS something, whether it's natural intelligence or merely hard-working, they still possess that knowledge. I don't believe in the IQ part of the SAT I ...
SAT IIs are better than SAT I, but the levels being tested are still lower than APs.
Flavian's right, AP scores can only help you, not hurt. IB can compensate for APs, I'm sure.

I don't know for sure though.

that info helps, legendofmax, IBs are basically nothing without APs if you are not a diploma candidate.

I took Math Studies SL ~ Colleges Could Care less about this one especially because it is so simple even compared to a Pre-Calc - I took Math Studies as a Junior and took Calc AP BC this year. AP Calc would def. be a good one to take.

HLs are recognized by most colleges if not all. They are considered the equivalent of APs in many (Like the U of CA system I'm dealing with).

SLs - most colleges don't care at all...grrr...but this is ONLY if you are non-Diploma

Since you are a Diploma candidate you should only need to take the minimum number of APs, doubling in SL topics is a start but not a necessity. IB Chem and AP Chem are very different, so you might have to self-study a bit. And AP Calc like I said before.

My school sent one girl to Penn (not many apply from here) who was a Diploma. High SAT scores, val., 5 on AP Calc AB as a frosh. or something, and took AP English.

~It's hard to really tell what is going to get you in to a school, but as an IB Diploma Candidate myself, my focus is on getting high marks on the IB Tests this year. I would say APs were more important to me last year because they go on the college app. APs (although things are changing slowly) are definitely more widely recognized in the U.S..

good luck, and sorry for writing a book, lol

from my experience, if you mess up on one or two ap exams, but all your other scores (sats, sat IIs, GPA, etc.) show that you are a strong candidate, the AP score wont be held against you. This happened with me, on the AP english lang/comp last year. I got a 3, and i listed my score on my applications (harvard EA), but luckily still got in :)
