How much work is assigned on average for each of your AP classes at school? I'm a junior who's only taken APUSH, but got between 1-1:30 of hw from that class every night...I can't believe that some people take 5 or 6 AP's a year unless USH is an extremely hard class or the difficulty level varries a great deal.

hmmm

The only homework in AP US was to read...and noone generally did that so it was a pretty chill class. That is, until AP testing.

And AP Spanish was pretty regular in amount of homework
AP Language was a little hard for me, beacuse we'd write essays everyday, but you soon get the hang of it, and can crank them out in 20 min flat.
But these are the "easy" APs....classes like AP Calc and AP Bio are HELL!

S took three ap's this year, and had 4-6 hours of hw every night.

Im a junior that has only taken US history too and i found that there wasnt a HUGE amount of work to do. I'd say one major project every quarter, one essay a week (varied thematic and dbq), text reading every night, dbq analysis and debates, a few assigned books (Burr, The Jungle, Grapes of Wrath) but that was it for AP. this class isnt easy but its not a killer either. I too am skeptical as to how some people can take 5-6-7 APs a year! wow

with 5 aps I average about 3ish hours a night

It's beyond me how people can be president of 3 clubs, play 3 varsity sports, and take 4 AP classes. I personally get home from vartisy baseball practice around 6...ready to do homework after dinner and shower around 7. 6 hours of homework just wouldn't fit in.

six hours seems kind of steep, though. much of it comes down to time management. i can get much of my work done between/during classes. with 5 aps, debate, a varsity sport, playing viola, president of a club/in a few others I still manage to have plenty of time for other things. like wasting my time on cc ;)

3 hours of HW? with 5 APs? wow, that is nothing. Im taking Bio AP, and sometimes we wouldnt have anything, but that was VERY rare. Otherwise we had 1-3 hours, depending on how close we were to tests because we were allowed to do homework at our own pace, we just had 2 weeks or something to crazy ammounts of work. Our APUSH class had about 1.5-2 hours a night. Our AP englsih is irregular, but they would have 1-1.5 a night, sometimes less. 3-4 weeks before APs the teacher tried to fit a 600 page book and a 350 page book. It was funny seeing everyone read during breaks. Physics AP has optional homework, meaning the homework is 0% of the grade, but if you dont do it you fail anyway, and that was 1.5-3 hours. Calc was ~1 hour. Chem was 1-2. Im not sure about spanish but im sure they have a lot. APs are over, and they now have a new spanish poetry unit. Thats all i can remember. Our AP classes tend to be really laborsome for some reason, but we also have a pretty good success rate. ANd if people have a lot, they just BS their work, or procrastinate until the weekend. Thats what everyone in bio did, haha, thus their 8 hour a day bio weekends.

haha i agree. I almost died while taking 4 Ap's in Junior and people here take 6 and say they shoulda taken more. For me, in JUnior, a typical day was from home, go straight to my home. start my homework from 3 to 12 at midnight. no dinner, no snacks, straight out working. My eyes still have bags and I lost 21 pounds that year.

wow. for me, calc was the time between when I got to school and school started as well as the 10ish minute school announcements thing that goes on before 3rd period, chem was lunch, world was random times between classes/during really boring lectures, etc. i'm confident i got 5s on all. time management is key.

So, BewareofNerd, you're saying that on a good day you'll only have 6 hours of homework, but on a bad day you could have up to 12 hours? That seems just a little ridiculous.

It depends on the class. I couldn't tell you an average, because I really don't keep track. I probably spend a lot more time doing homework and reading for AP classes than I realize, too...

APUSH and AP Bio were the only AP's that I really needed to read for, and that did take some time. AP Calc homework would sometimes take up to 2 hours, but only during certain portions of the curriculum. I'd say the majority of the time it took anywhere from 30 min to an hour, but that's also because my teacher was really good, so I didn't need to spend a lot of time going over what she had explained to fully understand it. And AP English I've only occasionally had homework for, but we did read a lot, and that took some time.

Anyway, we have a block schedule, so that, in my opinion, helps on cutting down on homework a little bit, or at least makes everything more manageable...

Oh, and music theory is about 1/2 hour, haha

Um yes,m but i dont take all those classes, in fact most dont. Its mostly what i see from others. I only have two this year, and its impossible to take more than one science AP, and those are the most time consuming of all. I only take Music Theory and Bio AP, so on a really bad day, i can have up to 5 hours for those two, and its mostly bio. there is no way i would take all those classes...

Alright good because otherwise you'd just be insane. I'm glad that at least some other people have hard APs. I'm still in disbelief at the "I'm taking Calc AB, BC, AP chem, AP Bio, AP Euro, and self studying psych next year. Do I need more????"

At my school this year, for the classes that I'm in, Physics C, Compsci, and Gov have no "real" homework. AP Lit is my only AP class out of five this year that has regular assignments. Half the days I can get away without doing any homework at all. Last year, however, I had a lot of homework for Calc BC, but they were essentially optional.

why would someone take calc AB and BC? And thats 6 APs! Thats insane. Im afraid of taking four next year (i really am...), but someone wants to take more than 5 classes and an ind. study? That aint right...

I just looked at a thread in the "What are my chances?" forum and "thatindiandude" says "yeah, I'll have 14 AP's by the time I graduate." I just don't see how that's possible unless a standard class at some schools=AP classes at others.

Possibly ind. study a few subjects. Some schools may offer freshman APs, in which case that doesnt seem that far-fetch'd. Having 14 APs doesnt necesdsarily mean having taken 14 classes. Im only taking 2 this year, but i might have 9 by the end of high school even though im only taking 4 AP classes next year. Ind. study is probably it

Except for some calculus, almost none.

Or I could lie and say I have 600 hours a week, whatever works.
