APs do not count for GE???? AP Gov useless?

I'm confused about how the AP credits are used. Can someone help me? From what I understand so far, AP credits cannot count for GE credits, but only for credits pertaining to your major. (Am I wrong? If so, please correct me.) Or does this depend on the particular college? I'm really interested in the UC system.

Anyways, I talked to my counselor, and she's really indirectly and unclear with her answers. She told me that the credits for AP US Government are useless if I want to major in the science field. WHY?? I already talked to my counselor 3 times, and I never get a concise answer. I'm planning on taking AP gov, but I don't want to take it if I don't get college credit. Someone please help me.

Credit policies vary widely by school. Sometimes AP courses can substitute for a particular course or courses, sometimes they can be used to fulfill non-course specific distribution requirements, sometimes they are used for placement but not credit, and sometimes they are not recognized at all. You need to research the policies of the schools in which your are interested if this is important to you. And, of course, your competitiveness as an admissions candidate might be improved by taking AP courses even if the course is not honored for credit by the school you apply to.

Policies appear to vary even within the UC system. Here is a sampling.

UC-Davis policies: Freshmen: Advanced Placement
UCLA policies: UCLA Undergrad Admissions: AP Credit - College of Letters and Science
UCSD policies: <a href="http://revelle.ucsd.edu/aa/ur/chart/ap.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://revelle.ucsd.edu/aa/ur/chart/ap.pdf</a></p>

Google "<school name=""> AP credit" to find policy pages.</school>
