APs in Admissions

Another thread got me interested in this: how, if at all, are AP exam grades used for admissions?

this is about the 10th thread asking whether AP grades are used for admissions or not omg lmfao. SEARCH and you shall find.lol

No, they're not that significant. It can only help you if your class grade is low, but your exam grade is high. OR It can hurt you if ur class grade is good, but ur exam grade is bad. SAT II's are what really counts.

Rarely if at all do APs matter for admissions.

That said if your school offers a number of APs the top schools
expect you to have taken these and not done easier coursework.

If by some remote chance you won one of the siemens AP awards in
Junior year (given to two per state) then it means something (he he
that you don ot have a life).

i think its something that everyone has on their apps at this point, but doesnt really matter in the grand scheme of things...

The Common Application this year asks for the scores. That's HUNDREDS of colleges that will be seeing self-reported scores. Yes, search and find the earlier thread.

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/371690-colleges-request-ap-scores-their-application-forms.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/371690-colleges-request-ap-scores-their-application-forms.html</a></p>

it doesnt matter, but IT SHOULD

No it shouldn't.

Yes, it should.

Think about it. If APs have absolutely no role in admission, there won't be any space for you to put down AP scores on the application. THINK PEOPLE!!

I heard MIT uses them. Berkeley only uses them as tie breakers.

It is definitely a plus to have solid AP scores under you belt. If anything it will show adcoms that you are taking a rigorous courseload. Be aware though that for those top 20 competitive schools, it is the norm for applicants to have a pile of AP's (it isn't unusual and in many ways puts those who don't take AP's look weaker).

I only reported 1 AP (5 US Hist.) and (barely) got into Dartmouth...
