I'm currently a Freshman (9th Grade) but I'm thinking ahead and planning on what to do in Sophomore Year. I'm particularly strong at English and History, but rather weak at Math. I am fairly decent at Computers and Technology. In a nutshell, I'm planning to take 3 APs in Sophomore Year:

AP Human Geography
AP Computer Science A
AP Chinese

Is that too hard? How difficult is each class? How many APs did YOU take in Sophomore Year? Cheers!

Well, Human Geo is a very easy class. It is a joke. I didn’t take the class and got a 5 on the test. AP Computer Science is…well. If you are good with word processing and stuff like that then this class is not for you. It requires a lot of logic. If you are bad at math you will not do well on the test. AP Chinese is a relatively hard class even for native speakers.

As a sophomore, I took two AP classes: AP Chemistry and AP World History. Meanwhile, I was studying calculus ab on my own and then decided to take the ap exam. AP Chemistry was difficult for many of my classmates. AP World History, there was a lot of work, but not as worse as APUSH, the class I’m taking.

lol. just 1. calc ab. 5.

I can only speak for AP Chinese as Mandarin is my second language (I’ve studied it ever since I was 4).

I plan to take AP CLC next year. As an almost native speaker, I think the hardest part of AP CLC is the culture part of it. The rest of the paper looks really not that difficult but I guess the culture part is something you need to study for (unless you already know your stuff!). My advice (do take this with a pinch of salt) is to practice speaking more so that you’ll sound more fluent unless you really do sound like you grew up in Beijing.

I know that there’s only (I think!) one prep book and it’s by Barron’s.

Freshman year

AP US History (taking)
AP Chinese Language and Culture (native, no need for studying at all)
AP Human Geography (taking)
AP Psychology(taking)

Just so you all know, taking a foreign language AP as a native speaker is pointless. It adds basically nothing to your app.

Again, don’t bother with Chinese if you’re a native. Human Geo is simple, and so is CS. I took two AP’s as a sophomore and I got more work in other classes.

I agree and I don’t. LOL
I don’t think people who take AP English Language/ Literature are all non natives.

I’m a current sophomore and I am in one AP class this year: AP World History. I don’t know one kid in my class, which is in more then one AP class. I took AP Human Geo last year and received a 3 on the AP exam. AP World History is a lot harder then Human Geo for sure. My grade is only about 2-4 points lower, but it’s a lot more work! There is a lot of info for World History too, but I think you can manage AP Human. I’m also not a math or science person, but surprisingly I’m doing better in Honors Chem then Honors Bio.

The AP English Language/Literature tests are VERY different than the AP Foreign Language tests.
The AP English tests test your ability to read and write proficiently, especially about works of literature. They are DESIGNED for native speakers.
The AP Foreign language tests are designed for non-native speakers. Native speakers taking those tests just mess up the curve and make it harder for the non-native speakers who actually have to work to learn the language get a good score.

“Just so you all know, taking a foreign language AP as a native speaker is pointless. It adds basically nothing to your app.”

meh. It has its uses. Like if you took 7 APs and got 4 or 5s on all of them, and couldn’t be bothered to study for anything else. Just take the damn language test to get NAP Scholar.

I love it when people compare the AP English exams to foreign language exams. As bernier said, the AP English exams assume fluency in the English language. How would you be able to analyze symbols or critique use of language if you could barely speak the language? Even the foreign literature exams don’t expect the same level of literary insight as do the English exams.

I took only one AP as a sophomore: AP European History. I got a 3 on the AP Exam.

byubound: Same here. I just took AP Euro, but I received a 5 (and while that is considered nothing special on here, I was the first student in 2, maybe even 3 years to receive a 5). I can’t see how you guys are able to take so many AP classes to early. It is really hard to take more than 1 ap class your sophomore year at my school, and your choices are limited. You could pick AP computer science, AP statistics, AP world, or AP Euro, and AP Euro was really the only one that was guaranteed to work with your schedule. You really only have the freedom of 2 classes your sophomore year (minus the difference between taking an honors or regular classes), and I sing in choir, so that was my other choice. I could have taken 3 ap classes this year, but due to schedule conflicts (many), I could not. All the people that I know that are taking that many ap classes are doing pretty crappy anyways, which poses the question of why they even take ap classes in the first place.
