APs vs Subject tests

Hi guys,

I do well on subject tests but am unsure how I will fare in my aps, for example I got a 760 on the U.S. History sat II but a 4 on the AP test. I took AP Lit and AP world this year and am expecting a similar trend.

Can anyone comment on the strengths or weaknesses of the two types of tests to colleges comparatively? Especially if colleges can see both the AP tests and the subject tests.

This is a more niche question but as I am considering applying to Oxford University in England, what is their specific take on students that apply with SAT II rather than AP tests and vice versa?

Thanks

They ask for AP tests, because they are evaluating your readiness to take college-level courses. Subject Tests won’t cut it.

No US college requires AP scores, and the submission of them will not impact your application appreciably.

@skieurope oxfords website says they accept subject tests of over 700 and 5s on AP tests

Everyone has access to SATII tests…but not everyone has AP classes at their high school.

@migpasux You are correct; I stand corrected.

Many competitive colleges require SAT Subject Matter tests as part of your application. Most will consider APs if you voluntarily include them in your application materials, but they are not required.

Scores on AP exams are not very informative because there is a significant ceiling effect. You can get a 5 on some while getting a considerable number of the questions incorrect-and since the actual score is not revealed, colleges can’t distinguish those that really nailed the test from those who got a lot wrong.

So a 4 is not considered respectable/worth mentioning?
