Hello, I'm currently a senior in high school and plan on going to California for college. For those of you who don't know, CSUN is a public university meaning I would have to pay out of state tuition and APU is a private, Christian school? It's more expensive than CSU but soo far I do have a scholarship there. I'm more towards APU right now, I even already turne in my tuition and housing deposit but before I make my decision, I would really like some opinions on people who are very familiar with at least one of these two schools or the CSU system. I know CSUN as a public school is highly affected by the state budget and kids can't always register for their classes and can't always graduate in 4 years. Does anyone who go to CSUN or a CSU experience any of these things. Also, do you know if CSUN would award me any financial aid?

CSUN is probably not awarding any OOS financial aid other than what you qualify for in terms of Federal monies: Stafford Loans, Pell Grants, Perkins Loans, etc.

Never heard of APU until I looked it up (I’m from northern California). Not a big deal that I haven’t heard of it - but if the school is that small/unknown, it may not have a lot of money to give out to its students (again apart from Federal programs).

If money is a big issue, you may want to try and go to an in-state school rather than come to CA or attend a private.

APU actually awards a lot of financial aid. So far they gave me a 7k academic scholarship. They also have the university grant which is up to 10000 and they also have other university grants that would cover almost all my cost of attendance so financially, APU would be a good choice. But the thing about CSUN though is I wanted to know people’s perspective on the Cal states?

I would wait to make a final decision until you have award letters from both schools. Then look at them carefully! You want to know the full COA and the breakdown of awards (ie. grants, scholarships, loans) as well as any gap. Make sure you understand exactly what the awards are and, if they are renewable, what the terms of renewal are. Try to ask APU (or their students) if the need-based awards are going to be the same for all four years, assuming your EFC stays about the same, and find out what their recent annual increase rate has been. Then you’ll have a pretty clear picture of what school will best meet your needs, financially at least!

Try here for APU.
