APUSH Prep Book Reviews

AMSCO is great! But since I’m not really a reader and it’s on the lengthier side, I didn’t read the whole book. I strongly recommend The Essential Content by Larry Krieger and REA’s Crash Course which is also by Larry Krieger. I reviewed crash course the night before and got a 4, but not because of the book, but I think more of because I totally wrote about the wrong topic in one of my FRQs! hahaha! :P

I highly recommend The Essential Content. It’s especially good if you want to take the SAT II test as well. I got a 5 on the AP exam and a 770 on the SAT II.

If you’re already in a good APUSH class, The Essential Content cannot be beaten. I got an easy 5 and an 800 by using it to briefly review before both tests.

Does anyone have a pdf form of Essential Content? AMSCO is pretty expensive i don’t really want to buy all 3

You don’t need multiple books… I only used Essential Content. Don’t bother getting CC or Amsco. You’re overloading yourself

Barrons E-Z American History is great for content. Its not meant to be an AP test prep book, but it covers the necessary topics very well. I used it a lot this last year to study the topics my teacher discussed throughout the class and I earned a five on the AP test.

Essential Content by Larry Krieger was enough for me to get a 5! That coupled with as many practice questions I could! Overall it was a pretty easy exam with some prep!

AMSCO is amazing! The book gave all the essential details and I thought the book was actually interesting. I only read two chapters of my textbook, American pageant, and still got a 5 due to a great teacher and this book. (I took it in 2012)

ALL HAIL CRASH COURSE. My class supplied students with AMSCO, but I thought it was a little lengthy and I would never retain what I read. Instead, I read Crash Course multiple times and pretty much memorized it word for word. I got a 5! It’s concise and wonderful! Yes, there were some questions on the test that were not in the book, but due to the way the test is weighted, it doesn’t even matter. Crash Course was easy to read, and made the test easy to pass!

I know the Barron’s APUSH book has a bad rep on here, but I went through it the week before the exam and got a 5. I also had a pretty strong knowledge base though, so it wasn’t as much learning extra material as reminding me of what I’d forgotten.

The best way to study for APUSH is by taking the class. That is all one needs.

I took APUSH as a class, got a high A in it, and got a 5 without studying a bit.

Hey Guys! I think I have something that will help you all pass the AP Test with ease as well as guide you throughout your class. I am a Senior in high school, and I took AP US History last year. To study for the AP test I handmade over 1,000 flashcards that are divided into 13 units of study. From studying with these cards, I earned a 5 on the AP exam and an 800 on the SAT II. So, from my results you can tell these cards are legit!

Instead of just throwing them away, I am selling the cards on craigslist, and hopefully one of you will be able to benefit from my work.

Here’s the link: [AP US History / SAT II Flashcards - Over 1,000 Handmade Flashcards](http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sfv/bks/4027500635.html)

One more thing. Similar products by textbook manufacturers and education resource publishers will not have the same amount of information as these cards. In fact, the information will be quite lacking in details that are crucial to earning that ever so elusive 5 or 800 score.

My son is signed up for AP US History at his high school, and so far, the teacher is pretty unimpressive. Five days into the school year, and there’s no urgency at all. They just got their first assignment to read 15 pages from American Pageant, and they’ll have to read another 20 pages by mid-week next week (so two chapters in the first two weeks).

The teacher doesn’t seem to want timelines, theme reviews or theses or any of the kinds of things I’ve heard other APUSH students discuss (or that I’ve seen online courses assign).

We were thinking of having him drop the course at his HS and take it online instead, perhaps through CTE or a similar virtual institution.

We’d obviously prefer he stay in the school class, though. Do you think some of the resources recommended here would help not only during the year and in the class itself, but also as a sort-of self-study as the year progresses? As I mentioned, American Pageant is the textbook, and so far, we’re unaware of any primary-source books that might be used.

Do any of the resources here help students think about and prepare, over time, for the essays? Do the resources break down the process of writing an FRQ and how to do so? Or DBQs? Do they look at argumentative theses? Or are most of these tools simply a redux of the information presented by American Pageant or similar textbooks, in more bite-sizable pieces.

My son was in an APUSH class. To supplement, I got his The Insider’s Complete Guide to APUSH: The Essential Content and Crash Course, both by Larry Krieger. He used both and felt they were both useful (the first book for throughout the year and also for review; the latter book was critical for last minute review). He got a 5.

You MUST get Crash Course. HAVE TO. It’s literally a must-buy for this AP test because Larry Krieger is a genius and that book is all you will need to cram for the exam. I only read the first two chapters of the American Pageant before I gave up and turned to AMSCO for more in-depth knowledge. Don’t waste your time with American Pageant; too many superfluous paragraphs and unnecessary info. The combination of Crash Course and AMSCO will guarantee a pass, if not a 5 if you study!

AMSCO on Amazon is close to $60 now… Yikes… Ordering direct from the publisher is backordered as well.

I haven’t laughed so hard until I read you comment. “is this real life?” LOL
