Marbury vs Madison.

Who is Marcus Garvey?

OMG, 2 people posted while I typed in.

Monroe Doctrine said that Europeans cannot mess with the Western Hemisphere.

What were the amendments to the constitution during reconstruction times? Give the number and what they did.

Marbury v. Madison.

Europe-- stay the hell out of the Western Hemisphere!

What/who was the Lost Generation?

monroe doctrine - basically told europe to stay out of the western hemisphere

reconstruction amendments - 13, 14, 15 (no slavery, upheld voting rights, ummmmm i dont remember specifics about 15)

marcus garvey - back to africa movement

lost generation - writers like f. scott fitzgerald, hemingway who went to europe during the 20s because they were “disillusioned” with American materialism and stuff

jellybean27: 13 gave freedom, 14 granted citizenship, 15 gave right to vote

What’s the XYZ Affair?

What were the different labor movements?

ratification of the Paris Treaty ended Vietnam War?

What ended the War of 1812?

XYZ-- XYZ, Talleyrand’s aids, demanded a bribe before he would meet with US delegates. Uh… anti-French sentiment, Quasi-War?

Labor Movements-- AFL (Gompers), Knights of Labor (Powderly), John L Lewis (United Mine Workers), Industrial Workers of the World (Eugene Debs, or not…)

War of 1812-- Treaty of Ghent?

What was the significance of Uncle Tom’s Cabin?

Pulitzer/Hearst… the Maine explosion affair

well, sorta increased northern morale and morale abroad against slavery. really made the outsiders realize that slavery’s not a good thing, so that sorta helped restrain them from helping the South.

new question: what was the significance of the Albany Plan of Union?

It was an early attempt to form a union of the colonies.

What’s the Compromise of 1850?

It was Franklin’s attempt to bring the colonies together to coordinate defense, and he was ****ed when the colonial legislatures rejected it because of “fiscal jealousies” and drew this “Join-or-Die” snake cartoon… First attempt to act together, even if it didn’t really pan out?

Compromise of 1850-- Happened during Fillmore’s presidency. California enters as a free state, Fugitive Slave Law gets strengthened, and slave trade is banned in D.C. Henry Clay’s idea?

How did Soviet Premier Gorbachev’s policies differ from those of his predecessors?

Gorbachev attempted reform with his glasnost and perestorika (not sure if it is spelled right) policies. Improved Cold War relations and contributed to the end of Cold War by holding summit conferences and dissolving the Soviet Union.

What did Eisenhower warn about in his farewell speech?

Glasnost and Perestroika: openness and also a more free-market economy. A response to the economic stagnation that the USSR experienced in the 80’s. Also much less hostile to western countries.

let’s start asking more “big picture” questions…

Compare and contrast the life in the Northern, Middle, and Southern Colonies in the 18th century.

Eisenhower-- Watch out for that “military-industrial complex”!

Northern–Industrialized, likes protective tariffs
Southern-- Large-scale agriculture (thank you, Eli Whitney!), slavery, hates protective tariffs… slavery?
Middle-- Mixture of the two. More diversified than South, less cotton, more wheat, a bit of experimentation with using slaves in factories, but I don’t think that worked out really well.

Haha, I suck. And that was all economy.

How would you characterize American policy from the Spanish-American War to World War II.

Cmdr.Teddy Roosevelt was into expansion. US was expansion driven. Tail end of imperial expansion. Involvement in world politics and exerting US influence beyond our borders. Though we were isolationist in the beginning of WWI, we joined the war and began exerting our influence. Zimmerman telegram and Luisitana and unrestricted submarine German warfare resulted in our entering WWI. Then came WWII and we continued our international involvement.

What was McCarthyism?

haha, i don’t think he meant that general. foreign policy?

well, it went from more isolationist to imperialist, with a return to isolation in the 20’s because of WWI and then back to imperialist during FDR.

I think he was looking for "warning against the military-industrial complex taking over America. It’s not too specific, it’s been asked on an AP exam.

Who did Justice John Marshall usually favor in his rulings?

EDIT: McCarthyism is the crazy crackdown on commies. right?

the centrality of the federal government

can someone explain very simply what Baker Vs carr was, i dont understand what its saying from my boook

Marshall was for centralized government and against state ruling.

Who is Dorothea Dix?
