I'm going to be a junior this coming school year, and I'm planning on taking APSUH. (I took AP World History this past school year) I'm just wondering...for those of you who have already taken the class: Do you have any tips/advice that you would be willing to share?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

If you have to outline a textbook and you have access to it in the summer, get ahead with your notes. This will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and will allow you to understand what information from the chapter is important to know when you have less time during the year.

Read the book it is an automatic a

What book do you use? Is the teacher good?

We have a very good teacher. (supposedly, this is what I have heard)
Oh, and we use the American Pageant Textbook, and the American Spirit book as well. Are any of you familiar with those books?

Cheat if you can. My teacher was naive enough to pull his questions directly from the American Pageant teacher’s guide and so I ended up with an A both semesters. I am thankful for having such a great resource in the internet.

I loved the American Pageant. As long as you do all the reading, take good notes (it’ll save you later when you’re reviewing for the test) and pay attention and participate in class, you should be fine.

When should I start going through The American Pageant if I’m self-studying?

If you’re self studying, I’d say you should treat it like you’re taking the class and take notes on 1 or 2 chapters a week. You’ll never be able to learn all the obscure details if you start too late.

So I should start around the beginning of September?

If you could do that, I think you’d do really well. My class finished the book in maybe mid-April. If you could shoot for that, you’d have plenty of time to review.

OK… how should I prepare for the essays, etc? (I’m homeschooled )

Definitely take a lot of practice ones. At first, I thought the DBQs were absolutely awful, but the more you do the easier they are. Here are some links I found when I started the class. I never actually used them, but I’m sure they could be helpful:

I don’t have any old FRQ samples, but I’m sure you could find some.

I didn’t have American pageant, but make sure you read and absorb the information. I didn’t read 4th quarter because I was so over the class and I had a C for a while. I ended up with an A, both for the quarter and semester of course, but it was hard to bring it up.

Thanks tenchar

American Pageant is a great book, but even with outlining, it’ll be a bit hard to go back and study from it. Buy the AMSCO review book.

I had trouble finding an efficient method of note-taking during AP World History this past school year…any suggestions? (We are required to complete key terms and outline the chapters, etc.)

Do you take Cornell notes?
I’ve found that they are very effective for me. It’s easy to go back and locate what you want to review.

Use these websites. They helped me out A LOT last year.

Use course-notes.org
It has great outlines from every chapter in the 12th and 13th edition of the American Pageant.
